Default S60 reliability and repair cost question?

Hi all, I am considering buying an S60 between the years of about 2003-2007.

I really like the safety comfort and gas milage

But am interested in what kind of maintenance is needed and how much the repair cost will run. I am not new to doing maintenance and repairs myself but am new to Volvo's and wanted an idea of what to expect since I am planning on doing most or all work myself.

Is there any thing I should look for when looking at used S60's? know problem's ect?

Thanks a lot! looking forward to hearing about this car which I am super interested in and feel like it is the answer to what I have been looking for.

Well, welcome to the site. The S60 is pretty easy to work on and is built well. Following the recommended maintenance schedule is important. There are a lot of great resources available online in terms of information on forums like this and parts suppliers that can save you tons versus the dealer.

The S60 has a lot of configurations during those years (base, turbo, turbo AWD, T5, R). It looks like you already know to stay away from the 2001-2002 models. An ideal used S60 will have plenty of documented service records. Much of the expensive work is needed from 80k to 120k miles. The timing belt and water pump, oxygen sensors, pcv system should be done near 100k, though earlier is better. Suspension has been a big issue with mine as it neared 80k. The engines are strong in these cars. Everything is pretty straight forward to replace. No real major electrical flaws that I can think of. One tip: as you look at potential cars, play with everything and make sure it works as it should. If there is something you can only get at the dealer expect to pay an arm and a leg for it.

Make sure any recalls were done on the car. As you narrow your search, pay attention to service bulletins as well. It will give you better insight as to which questions to ask the owner and possible ammunition when negotiating price.

I hope others reply as well.

I have an 03 s60 with 168,000 I have changed the timing belt twice this last time was due to the idler tensioner having gone bad i figured I would go ahead and replace the tensioner, the idler pulley and the belt as a precaution, I have also replaced my upper and lower ball joints as well as my tie rods. my Dim had just gone up and had it repaired....so all in all with parts and the labor on the Dim I have spent over $1,500...however with that having been said I love my car and find this minimal since it is an 03 and I had no other repairs, they are quick, reliable cars that if taken care of will last you to 300,00 or more like my 98 960 did! good luck and I hope you decide to make the move you will be happy you did! VOLVO FOR LIFE!
