Default S60 vs S40

I offered to buy my son a 2002 S60 AWD. He wants a S40 as he thinks it is quicker. I was under the impression that the S60 is the sporty one. Can anyone here give me some advice and opinion on this?

Thank you

IMO...they are the same.
The S60 is heavier than the S40....
So the S40 might be a little quicker.

Now the T5 S60 is pretty quick.

S60 T5 has a more power than the s40 T5, but the s40 is lighter and smaller. I would still get the s60 as its extra space is nice when driving your friends around.

Thanks swede60. I also think the S60 is better and especially here in Canada where we need the AWD, in the winter.

FYI....Both cars can get the AWD.
But I am with you guys....S60 FTW.
If it was me, I would buy a S60 before the S40.

TIPSP, when did the S40 start with AWD? I am sure that the some of the S60 2002 has the AWD but have not seen any S40 (2002)with AWD yet.

I have a 2001 S60 & a 2003 S40... They are both great cars & fun to drive....The S60 does have more passenger room & definately heavier than the S40. I guess it all depends on what you think is best for your son.... I find the S40 is quicker & has a quieter engine than my S60, but if I was going to give my child a car I guess I would go with the S60 because of its size, roominess & safety....Its all up to you.... Good luck!

I agree with you S40S60. But he is at the age where looks are important and he likes the look of the S40. Personally I would go with the S60 as it has AWD too(2001) and we need that occasionally in Canada, where we live. I will see if I can convince him.

I think you are making the right choice for your son, Magic. Just also don't forget since you live up in Canada, make sure if the tire treads will be able to handle the bad weather. Even though I live in New York, we get our fair share of ice, snow & rainstorms. Good luck again!

We use studded tires from the end of October till late April, so thats not a problem. However, because we live outside the city, some of the roads can be very dangerous and do not get ploughed too often. So that is why I prefer an AWD with traction control, though obviously a lot of people drive front or rear wheel driven cars in the winter.

Okay so your looking at 2002 models.......I believe S40 AWD started around 06, so is that too new?
I Like the look of the s60 better.

We just moved from UK to Canada and I have to buy a couple of cars for the family. (Where we live there is no public transport and a car is a necessity). So I thought a 2002 S60 for my son and a 2002 S80 for the wife would do. Then I can buy a C70(conv)(for the summer use and share the S80 with the wife.

Well that is very nice of you what you are doing for your family.
If my dad buying me a pretty nice car like an S60, I would just say, "Oh yeah...Love you dad!" But If I gave him any sign of not looking "thrilled" about getting it, he would say...."Shut up, and take the car, or you will be walking!"

Good Luck

That's exactly what I am going to do in the end. Take it or leave it. LOL
By the way I have also posted this in the diagnostic thread too but do you have any knowledge of the diagnostic software and the interface available that is affordable for Volvo?
I know that for BMW and Audi, it is only around 100 dollars for both the software and interface on ebay.

Look for a program called VADIS. It is pretty nice, and it only cost a couple of $ on Ebay.

Thanks. I have seen it being mentioned but what is the interface that can be used to connect it to the car?

Man, if my Father was buying me a Volvo, I wouldn't care which one he got me! But If I had to choose from, I would say the S60. Def. more room to tote stuff and people around! Little cars are faster but the small size and lack of room gets old.

I am not 100% sure what they use, but I think If you are really nice to your local volvo dealer....they might sell you the connecter for the software.
I believe you will need a open serial port on thhe computer.

Its actually not even just a cable that you need, its a "box" called VCT2000 something. That box costs around $1200 according to my mechanic and it connects in between your laptop and car.
