Hi, 2002 S60 AWD 99300 mi.; the transmission has a shudder when placed in reverse, more pronounced when backing up a incline, although not everytime. The dealer did a diagnostic, no codes, removed front axle and rear driveline and said there was more slack in the tranny and they didn't know why but a new trans. would solve the problem, $4700! I said button her back up I'll go home and think about it. I have flushed new oil through the trans. (correct oil), the magnetic plug had minimal metal dust and no chunks. It seems to me if the trans. was self distructing I would see more on the plug. It shifts great through the forward gears. Electronic or mechanical? Thanks, bigld

Before I start, please note that I'm an 850 driver and am not privy to S60s.

When an automatic gearbox goes, modern cars usually need another gearbox rather than repairing due to their complexity. But that doesn't mean you have to pay full $ for a new unit; if you can locate a rebuilt/used unit with low mileage and can find a shop that can install it for you, that saves you quite a bit of $. As for shops, I would look for those who specialise in Swedish/European makes. They may charge more, but the quality of work is incomparable to generic town garages.

It may be due to worn-out clutch for the reverse gear, or malfunctioning solenoid/hydraulic control unit. This probably has nothing to do with the problem,but try checking for proper fluid level.
