Default Steering Wheel Problem

I own a 2007 S60. I just finished replacing my transmission this week. Once my mechanic was done replacing the transmission and all the parts were put back in the car. We went to take it on a test drive and now the steering wheel just spins. When I turn off the car the wheel locks in place. Also the car can drive in reverse and forward, you just can't turn the wheel. What could be causing this problem? I've been without my car for months (lack of money to fix until now) and I really want to get back to driving again. Can anyone please give me an idea of what might be going on. Thanks so much.

Sounds like the steering column was never reconnected to the rack and pinion unit. You may have broken the clockspring as well that controls the air bag and anti-skid electronics.
