I'm new to Volvo ownership and I have a question. I just purchased a 2012 S60 T5. It doesn't have an engine temperture gauge. I've never owned a car that didn't have one. Is this a long time Volvo thing or something new in the Volvo world? How do I keep an eye on engine temperature?

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. My S60 doesn't have a spare tire either.

 

It is new to a lot of car manufacturers. My new 2011 Subaru Legacy does not have one either but my old 2004 S60 did. I think it is because the gauge confuses people.

 

the car computer is supposed to keep an eye on the temperature of the engine for you, and notify you via dashboard when there is a problem.

They are making these new cars very complicated and ONLY TO BE SERVICED BY THE DEALER.

 

That is a new version of the old Idiot Light. I like to know when the engine coolant has warmed enough to run the heater. I also like to know if there is a problem developing long before the computer decides to tell me.

The lack of a spare tire is a bigger pain. After my salesman explained about the electric tire pump and the can of sealant, I asked him what I would do if I had a total failure of a tire such as a sidewall tear. He told me that I could call Volvo Road Service and they would take me to the nearest Volvo dealer. When I asked him if they were open at 2:00 AM or on Sundays, he just stood there.

I bought the donut tire that Volvo parts offers. Now I have a spare tire but no truck space.
