Washing the Engine
Any tips on how to wash the engine. I have realized that the engine is really getting dirty and was not sure if it's safe to wash it, but spoke with a couple of mechanics who said it's not a problem. Would like to hear if you guys/gals wash your engines and what products you use.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I would say go to Walmart or any Parts store and get a good Degreaser. Spray it all over, let it sit for a few minutes and wash off. Be very Careful on water spray pressure. I have seen people use pressure washers and get sensors wet with the force behind that and ruin them. You should be ok with a garden hose. This is a good product IMO..http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...questid=827169
Absolutely no pressure washer. Somehow, water will get under the boots of sensors and cause lots of problems. Degreaser? If needed. What's getting dirty? If its just valve cover, injector covers, top of radiator, and things you see when you open the hood, you might try manually cleaning it first. With something like Honda's instant detailer available in motorcycle shops. Use it with high quality rags or shop-strength paper towel. My wife, besides her V 70, has an '00 Sebring convertible that isn't winter driven. All I've needed to do to it is the spray detailer which cuts thin oily stuff and shines up what's painted or plastic. And, remember to do the inside fender wells, reachable firewall, underside of the hood, too. Clean what's painted under the hood and it makes a big difference in overall appearance.
If the engine is greasy, I'd suggest Simple Green followed by garden hose application then paper towels. Its not corrosive and hasn't ever dulled the aluminum on my motorcycles.
