What is procedure to check trans fluid level?
I have a 2001 S60 2.4T with 48k and need to check my transmission fluid level.
I have found the trans dip stick but don't know what when to check for accuracy.
does the car need to be hot?
does the car need to be running or turned off?
Also, is Mobil 1 synthetic trans fluid OK to use in this tranny?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Pete

RE: What is procedure to check trans fluid level?
Thanks Tech,
I checked my trans fluid with it hot and in park w/ motor running - didn't see any trans fluid on the stick at all. When I turn it off and check the fluid it shows on the stick between "cold" and "hot".
The fluid is still red and doesn't smell burnt. The car has 48K miles, I have no prior maintenance history except I am second owner and the car was a 4 year lease. I've had the car for a week.
Do you think I should have the trans fluid evacuated and completely replaced?
The dealer had offered a 12 month trans and engine warranty for $1,200 - should I go back and try to get this?

Sometimes the warranty will screw you.
If you even think about it at all you need to find out exactly what it covers.
They try to sell it on people in the end it doesn't really cover anything. SO look at it closely.
If there was no fluid on the dipstick when it is running then it is low and will need to be topped off.

RE: What is procedure to check trans fluid level?
I have also learned that the S60 5 speed auto requires Mobil 3309 transmission fluid or Volvo fluid as called out in manual - not synthetic. 3309 provides specific lubricant and additives - must be used or damage will occur to transmissoin. This is because the S60 5 speed auto is an Aisin-Warner transmission, not a Cadillac transmission.
Info on Mobil 3309 is available at http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...l_ATF_3309.asp
