Default 1998 S70 2.4 SE Starting problem

Quite often when I attempt to start car ...starter will rollover but won't engage motor. Wiggle the transmission(auto) and car ussually will start, sometimes stumbles. Could this be PNP or microswitch

If you hear the starter but it isn't cranking the motor then the starter is bad.

Or it's possible not completely engaged in Park. I know mine used to be a bitch to completely engage into park and wouldn't let me remove the key until I smacked it around a little bit, but I figured it out.

I'm having this issue lately - sometimes when I turn the key I will hear one click and nothing. Repeat abunch oftimes and it will start.
Bad starter? Quirky solenoid?

You may want to check the grey 'block' starter fuse under the hood. Mine was cracked and not fully engaged with the circuit. I had problems similar to what you described. I tapped on the fusegently (with the handle of a screw driver)and it re-engaged. It still works fine after 6 months. Be careful; if your battery is still connected (as I discovered) you may get a spark or worse--shocked.

Thanks- I did take it out and put back in on first day but will re-check today.

Will also check old(er) cheap(er) battery which came with car. I'm wondering if it may need some distilled water added.

I'm not sure this is starter-related anymore - because it will eventually start - sometimes on the 3rd try, sometimes on the 53rd.
