Default 1999 s70 awd

My son drives our s70 awd, he has said over the past few weeks that it feels like it needs a tuneup etc, runs funny, and that a light on the dash keeps going on and off. I showed him the book and he pointed to the area he thinks and he said it may be the ets. What are the symptoms?

Most likely the throttle body going bad.

Volvo just extended the warranty on the throttle bodys to 10 Years 200,000 miles.
If it is bad they will replace it under warranty.

When you take it in at first they might tell you they need to charge you a check out fee. If it turns out to be the throttle body it will be 100% FREE.

If they try giving you anykind of run around make sure they put the codes they pulled on the receipt and post them here. I will tell you if they are throttle body codes or not.

If you have a Indipendant shop pull the codes make sure they DON'T CLEAR them.

The dealer needs to see the codes.

If you do go to a Indipendant shop follow link I have posted the P-codes to Volvo code translation.
Most of them refer to the throttle body codes.

ETS, Electronis Throttle System. It goes bad in the 99 s70 awd's. I had the problem. I know he answered it above, TECH answered your issue.

However it is a Volvo ONLY repair, and it will cost about $1k, unless it is under their new warranty they put out for them.

Replace it soon. I replaced mine at 75,000 miles and I expect to replace it around 150,000 again if I have the car that long.

I am going to take it in this week, we actually leased the car then bought it out, I think we still have some extended warranty left on it anyway. I guess i will be somewhat insistent that they change it under warranty as opposed to clean it, or cant find any codes etc...

Well if the ETS light goes off, it really isn't a problem. If it comes on and stays on then you need to replace it.

Mine first came on then went off. A few days later came back on and stayed on.

Even though the light isn't on doesn't mean the problem isn't there. The codes are still in the computer and the fault is still there.
