2000 S70 glt starting problems

I started having problems last fall, the car would start and die right away, or sometimes not at all or sometimes it started just fine, so I replaced the fuel pump relay, no more problems, untill last week, started to do the same thing so I got a new relay and still have the problem, could I have got a bad relay? Got it from napa, it was made in china.

rspi Feb 2, 2012 04:06 PM

Yes. Not sure where they are made now. Order one from ipd or fcp.

kennedy759 Feb 2, 2012 05:50 PM

I just order one from FCP, cheaper than napa, napa has also ordered a new one for me, luckly it has a 3 year guarantee.

I changed out the relay, actually tried 3 differant ones and still having intermittent problems, I think I have a loose connection in the socket the relay fits in, I put in the relay from FCP(made in germany) and had problems, took the relay out, replaced it, put my finger under the socket and pushed the contacts up and it now starts perfect.

I seriously doubt that. You have some other issue. Have you checked fuel pressure? It's time to do some real trouble shooting.

1st, check for codes, even if you do NOT have a cel.
2nd, unplug the MAF and see if the car starts and idles. It may not run smooth but it should start and run.
3rd, check fuel pressure to make sure your pump is not going out.

checked for codes, none, going to get my fuel pressure gage back from my son in law this weekend and will check pressure. Will the adapter for a ford fit my volvo? Why check the maf sensor?

rspi Feb 10, 2012 10:18 AM

MAF sensors are known to cause starting issues.

kennedy759 Feb 10, 2012 01:20 PM

not sure how the maf would be the problem, today went to start it, it caught then died, tryed again and it run great, went to the drug store, it fired right up, went to the grocery and it caught and died, tryed again nothing, tried again, it fired right up. went home and tried it three times and it fired right up each time.

Intermittant problems really stink. My guess is that your fuel pump is going out. There is another chance that your CPS is going bad. Have your fuel pump checked, pressure.

Oh, have you had your ETM changed or is it original?

kennedy759 Feb 10, 2012 07:13 PM

I bought it used and I have not changed the ETM, it has 136k on it.

rspi Feb 10, 2012 08:53 PM

How long have you had it? Do a search ETM and see what people say about the label. I think a white label is the original one and a yellow label means it has been replaced. Please search the forum first and figure it out. Those things cause problems.

kennedy759 Feb 11, 2012 08:29 AM

I have had it for 2 years, put 10k mile on it, how do you get to the throttle body to see it?

rspi Feb 11, 2012 10:40 AM

You'll have to search ETM in the S70 and V70 sections. You'll find it.

kennedy759 Feb 11, 2012 11:11 AM

looks like it is located under the intake manifold and the label is right behind the dip stick and it is yellow.

rspi Feb 11, 2012 12:36 PM

Is that a replaced one or OEM?

kennedy759 Feb 11, 2012 05:40 PM

It says volvo on it

rspi Feb 11, 2012 08:25 PM

There is still a difference with the color of the sticker. One color is the original sticker, the other color is the replacement sticker color. Did you do a search?

kennedy759 Feb 11, 2012 08:43 PM

do you mean a different color of yellow? the yellow shows up on the replacements shown at sellers like FCP and groton.

IDK, Can someone chime in here???
