98 glt will not start
It has been awhile since I have been on here last.
My 98 s70 glt will not start, no crank, no nothing. My brother helped me replace the starter. It started twice, without trouble, and now i get nothing.
Is there any way to check if its the starter without having to remove it again. Or any ideas of what/how to check instead?

RE: 98 glt will not start
Sorry some how some of my post disappeared.
I meant to say jump the solenoid and see if the starter turns over.
This is how you do it. There is the small wire on the starter. Unplug the small wire and set it to the side. Use a pretty heavy wire and jump from the connector on the starter for the small wire to the stud where the positive wire goes and see if it turns over the motor.

RE: 98 glt will not start
So I decided to just go ahead and pull the starter anyway. I went to get it checked and took another one that definitely worked to make sure that they hooked it up correctly. Well the starter was bad. I had the "bad" starter checked before I installed it, it started twice, then died. Does this sound legit, can this really happen that suddenly?
Anyway, is the OEM starter the best cost effective option?
This is the best I have found so far...

And lastly, is there good how to on replacing a starter on an s70 out there? I got it out, but I don't know if I can get it back in. I've searched and it seems that it is fairly easy with the problem being workspace. What would be the easiest route?
thanks

RE: 98 glt will not start
The starter is now in the car, taking the cooling fan is definitely the way to go. I still have a few questions though. 1)The plastic barrier on the solenoid broke when the leads were tightened down. Will this have any effect? 2) Since the car has been sitting for a couple of months, is there anything else I should check out or do as well?

RE: 98 glt will not start
Just when you think the job is done... more problems.
Originally the starter would not disengage, so I replaced it with a starter from a junkyard that tested good. It started twice. Then nothing. Pulled it back out.
I then replaced it with a brand new starter, not Bosch but it does have a 2 year warranty. The car started fine, and I drove through the neighborhood a couple of times and the battery died, so I got a new one. Put it in and drove to Advance to get the codes cleared and the charging system checked. The guy said that the alternator was bad. I don't know how the alternator can go bad just from sitting for about 2-3 months, but OK whatever. Once I got home, it sat for about 3 days and now will not start.
I am getting pretty frustrated, and don't know what I am doing wrong. I pulled this starter out and am going to get it checked ASAP. I also took a couple of pictures of my wiring. If for some reason the lead wires were backwards, what would it do?

If the starter is good (brand new) and the battery is also brand new and fully charged, then even if the alternator is bad it should still at least start, right? Well, before I ask too many questions, I will get the starter checked.
Thanks for all the help tech, I definitely appreciate it!

RE: 98 glt will not start
Tech, as always thanks for the help.
Now that the 3rd starter is in the car, it works, but it makes a noise like the gear in the starter is not releasing. It sounds like the gears are still meshed together. Once the car is started the car then drives the starter motor causing this noise. I also found a helpful thread on matthewsvolvosite.com

Any thoughts?

RE: 98 glt will not start
If I do not think it is running correctly, I am not going to drive it. It just sucks since I have to bum my moms suburban. So... if you were me, you would just try again? Right now that is easiest for me, since the starters are under warranty, I am just spending time.

RE: 98 glt will not start
I took it out and the flywheel in the tranny looks good. I went back to the parts store to have them test it and check it out, and basically "we" figured out the problem... both of the larger gauge lead wires connect to the same post. From the pictures that I have seen, this is incorrect. What would most likely be the outcome if I tried this?
Right now, my new plan of action is to go to the local you pull it yard (hopefully I can find a comparable volvo) to...
1) double check the wiring
2) find a Bosch and try it.
thanks for hearing out my issues tech.
