Hello hello!

So I'm happily posting for my first time in the Volvo Forums! I've been a loyal older Audi owner for that last couple years until this vehicle. I'm enjoying it and got it for a pretty good price. The car has 121,000 miles on the odo.

So I have been driving it for awhile and I have noticed a couple of things about the clutch engagement. I'm fairly certain that the clutch is original and needing replaced. Unless you can adjust it? Can you!? haha that would be most excellent if you can, and that was the simple fix for my problems.

So what is happening currently is the following:

Slightly rough when shifting, just not smooth....You really have to ride the pedal like perfectly in one spot. Doesn't seem like anything wrong with the pedal hydraulics being smooth or anything. Also perhaps a mount is getting worn out as well and amplifying the problem. I want to have those all looked at.

When it's cold, like first shift of the day, and rarely at other times - sporadically - it will make a little howling noise, like a rubbing noise and you can slightly feel a slip as you're releasing the clutch pedal.

Under full throttle shifts or hills it never slips though...

Does this just sound like a worn out clutch that needs replacement? I want to have to installed before I do some sort of damage to the flywheel or something. Also any recommendation as far as brands for clutch/parts?

I called Clutch Doctors today and it was $1,059 for a full clutch replacement and flywheel resurfacing. 9.1 hours of labor. Time consuming... That's pretty expensive. I'm sure it will last the life of the car thereafter it's just kind of ****ty to have to do it so soon after purchase.

How much have any of you guys/girls spent on having this done. Definitively "Butter Smooth" shifts and great engagement Ü?

Well I just did a auto to manual swap on my Yellow one in my sig.
I spend about $250.00 alone on the clutch kit. Yes it is about 9 hours labor to do it.

Check with a Volvo specialist in your area if you have one(Not the Dealer)

There is not all that many manual tranny cars here so you might not get to much info.

 

Yeah I know it is fairly rare to have a stick shift. I know that the 1998 T5 was the first car you could get a stick in with a T5. I would actually be really curious to know what the percentage of stick shift cars was? I'm assuming it's got to be less than 20% Does anyone know?

Yeah the prices I have quoted online was like 300-479$ for a couple of brands. Sachs is an alright brand and they have that listed for some places about 440$

 

Not sure of the % of them out there I wish I knew myself. Now when I was going for the clutch there was one for a R that was over $400.00 which I chose to stay away from for now. Only because I was short on $$$ for buying it. I will see how long this one will last.

 

This info was posted on Swedespeed awhile back but I can't find the thread. I do know that the numbers for manual tranny S70 T5s with 5-speeds imported to the U.S. were approximately:

1998- 350
1999 - less than 200
2000 - less than 90

I believe the number of 5-speeds in the V70 T5 were even lower. There are also 5-speed non-turbo S70s around but nobody much cares about them (numbers are also small)... I don't know what the total # of T5s imported for these model years were but I'd guess the manual cars were less than 10% of the total and even lower than that in 2000. There are defincitely far more base models and GLTs around than T5s.....

 

Alan, where did you get the M56 tranny from for your swap?

 

I bought a 95 N/A wagon for $400.00 then swapped it all.
