Cranks won't start
I've recently been hit with the electrical gremlins on my 1998 s70 glt. This is my 1st post so if seem to go the long way around the problem I apologize now, but from ready other post I want to get all important information out there to get the right info. The car was broken into several weeks ago and they were only successful in damaging the ignition switch assembly (tumbler side) Have been driving it using just the electrical side (screwdriver). Apparently this car doesn't have a factory alarm nor immobilizer(no 210/211 relay/no plug in) .got home one evening cut it off and no start since. Fuel get to the rail, will start/run with starter fluid. By passed fuel relay, new fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, wires ,distributor cap ,maf .fuse#2&3 good. It did start missing right before I got home. I now have a throttle position sensor code as well as a 1617/1716, sorry lost the paper

Ok, since it will run with starter fluid that means the spark side of it is good, Compression and timing should be good too since it runs with the spray. That leaves fuel. Anytime a car runs on spray but not on its own there is a fuel issue. First off, I would diagnose the throttle position sensor and fix it and go from there. Fuel may be getting to the rail, but at what pressure? If it still does not start after fixing the throttle position sensor issue, I would first check fuel pressure to make sure it is within spec. Can you hear the fuel pump running when you turn the key?
I had a 98 here that would not run with the MAF plugged in. Unplugged the MAF, it would run on speed density backup, and was actually driveable like that. I had given the car away, and the people I gave it to drove it that way indefinitely. You can try that for free. I eventually convinced them to put a MAF on it out of my copious amounts of spare parts.

Not sure how a P0740 code can cause a no start. Usually that code gets associated with hard shifting or slippage. Considering you have a damaged ignition switch, I'd wonder about whether its degraded and is not turning all circuits on. Did you check the fuse/relay box for power? I'd also check out the injector relay (assuming your 98 is like the 850s where there is a gray relay up by the side of the radiator that powers the fuel injectors. tap the relay to see if that gets you some squirt...
I can't say either, but FWIW I did discover my truck is designed to "not generate enough power to move" if there is no power to the shift solenoids. I do know that. It wouldn't run right and I bought it real cheap. Decided to ignore the solenoid code until "after I figured this out" and that was quite a mistake. It took me about a month to figure it out. A fuse *fell out* of the fusebox, no kidding. Fixed it for 5 cents, but it took a long time to know where to spend that five cents.
Now, that said, if you were driving it with the MAF unplugged, it should be obvious that it's relying on other sensors, and you have a code for one of them. If you ever get it running, you may want to hook up a scanner and scribble down some baseline data too.
