Which dash light?

This is an excellent thread and I just did this repair today. No more noise from the dash!

A few notes though....there are 2 T-25 screws right under the ashtray area that need to be removed. Also be VERY careful not to slam the ashtray into the automatic shifter. I broke mine and had to get a junkyard part for $5.

Anyway, I did my own variation on it and used this glue to get the metal nuts to stay on the dash.

Then I used these office supplies to clamp them and leave the glue for 2 hours to set.

Now, instead of putting the foam or duct tape on the dash side I put it on the car frame side. The key is to prevent metal to metal or metal to plastic contract. I used 3 layers of duct tape for a cushy buffer.

The first time it took me about 6 hours factoring in 2 hours to let the glue dry. If I had to do it again I could get it done in 60-90 minutes....not factoring in glue dry time.

BTW, just tighten the dash mount bolts snug...NOT torqued down hard. Otherwise, the glue will fail.

If you need a new evaporator now is the time to deal with it.If you are doing the evaporator as the primary focus of the job it would be a good time to deal with your dashboard mounts.Apparently mount failures are common and fall into the inevitable category.The only difference in my procedure was that I didn't remove the ignition switch key cylinder.It didn't seem to hamper my ability to get the dashboard out of the car.

I have a 1998 V70 which runs fine, no loose dash, no noise.

Does anyone know if a 1998 model can be affected by this broken tabs?
Also at what mileage do you expect to see this broken tabs?

Yes yours will most likely break. Mileage depends on alot of things climate,how much it sits in the sun.

Here in Fla I have seen them break at 60K or at 120K.

Between 1 and 2 hours. That is making sure you are careful and to get things right.

Whoa! This sounds bad for Volvo engineering. The worst built car I ever owned (Austin Healey 100-6) never lost its dash mounts! My fiance's car has this problem from the sound of it, I just sprayed silicone into the defrost ducts and around the dash pad and the infernal noise stopped but it will probably come back. Thanks for your patience in writing such a thorough article.

Sounds like this fix has worked pretty well for folks...I've spoken to a couple of dealerships and a Volvo service vendor and either they don't take this on or they charge ~$2k to re-do using plastic welding or charge ~$5k for a whole new dash and again, stick to plastic...know of anyone in Dallas who does this for a reasonable price?

Well i was planning on doing the job today but no time, so maybe tomorrow..

If anyone has any extra pics on the project i would love to see them! just kinda want to get a understanding of what im doing before i do it!

I have a '99 S70 with this issue and have found this thread on the repair to be IMMENSELY helpful . . . will be tackling it soon.
My #1 question is, where are all the photos on the first (and, arguably, most important) page of this thread? All I see are URLs and they don't work, even when I do a Google image search.

Sourcing a dash board - new or used
 

Thanks for all those leads regarding getting rid of dash board noises. My situation has gone way beyond that, because in order to install the new AC Unit, the mechanics instead of pulling down the dash board simply cut off the portion of the dash which wraps around the steering column (and discarded it) - thus the dash is quite unstable and the noises intolerable.
This unvelievable action was discovered when another mechanic went in to stop the noises as recommended in this forum.
Where can I source a dash?

Tech gave very detailed instructions. I found the above instructions for the same project. What is a long-term project. Make sure before you start, you have every day canceled. It is better to start on Saturday morning, just in case something goes wrong, you have Sunday to recover.

I'm working on a 2000 xc70 and have all screws out, per above, but for some reason, the dash is not lifting out. it seems free, and you can tilt dash freely, but it seems that it is not releasing at the Dash Tabs.. do you have to really pull or push away. What is the secret, using two people, and not breaking or damaging when removing.

The clip area tends to stick to the body you have to pull hard and mess with it to get it loose.

well i was messin around with this a few weeks ago and i was at the part with the steering wheel, does it matter if the left side is straight up in the air or the right? or do you have to unscrew the screws the turn the wheel and do the other side.. was not getting that step =/

I have read your very thorough description of this procedure, I have a hand problem and could never attempt this. In your estimation what would a garage, mechanic charge for this? My wife's V 70 1999 with 185,000 miles makes the squeaky noise that stops if you push against the dashboard. I am going to have to pay someone to do this and am looking for an idea of cost? Thank you very much
