Default I have searched, I'm new to volvos please help

Hi to all,

Well after looking at volvos for 10 yrs and not really knowing much about them, I bought one this weekend.

I am new to the volvo family friends have recommended them due to high safety ratings, great reliability...

I paid $2100 on a 2000 S70 with 230k miles, engine sounded great, did not get a chance to drive it prior to buying it (auction). I don't mind the mileage to me it's still young. (I've onwed cars and put at least triple that amount with no issues as long as maintenance is kept). Here's the issues at hand:

1- -- There is a service light, put scanner on but will not read it instead it gives an error message saying vehicle needs to be properly grounded.

2--- The "W" button or arrow is constantly flashing, from the manual I understand it is on winter mode. I tried putting it on park and pushing the button to shut off but did not work.

3--- When I drove it home, it struggled when I pushed the pedal, it would get to 2.5k rpms then would bog down to 1.5k and go up again to 2.5k to bog down and did that irregardless of the speed of travel.

4--- I have noticed through searching here that there is not supposed to be 3 (+) wires going from the (+) battery post to the fuse panel closest to the air filter box.

Any help from you guys would be appreciated, I did search came close to the admin resident tech here stating on another post that an 850 had a bad ECU with similar issues.

I am hoping tech and others can help me figure this out. I am not new to cars just to volvo technology.

Thank you,

Dave

Scarey to buy anything that old from an auction. 230 is a lot of miles.

-Flashing arrow: make sure TPS throttle position sensor, is connected near Throttle body. It can cause irratic idle. that W mode is going to restrict your driving habits a lot, but I doubt it's actually in that mode. Might be a PNP switch as well, search on that.
-any check engine lights?
-the service light, are you saying it says, service now? or are you calling that a CEL?

You will need to put new plugs, clean throttle body, change oil, change trans fluid, new timing belt, serp belt, put in a host of front end parts, brakes, and probably a radiator. Then the oil leaks with hoses and gaskets around and about the turbo.

Unless you can do the work yourself, you are looking at $3500 to $4000 from a dealer to do all of that.

Your car does not have a TPS it has an electronic throttle body.
The PNP might be bad but you need to have the transmission codes pulled to find out for sure.

Thanks for the response...

Actually no leaks are showing on the car, belts looked great, that much I was able to check, engine at a stand still is superbly smooth. I don't think it's a turbo, at least I could not find it. From reading here not all S70s are turboed right?

I will however clean the throttle tps, I'm going to buy chilton's to help out.

Dumb questions,

Would a bad ecu prevent proper (+) flow from battery to fuse panel behind air box? (There is 3 wores that do not look oem running from battery to fuse panel)

How do you pull tranny codes? I have two different scanners a mac an an actron. Is it the same OBD II plug inside the glove box?

Thanks to all, I will search on the PNP switch.

Correct, not all S70's have a turbo. If you have a GLT, then it has a low pressure turbo. If it's a T5, then it has a high pressure turbo. You can check to see if you have a T5 or GLT by looking under the right taillight.

Your scanner needs to be able to read tranny codes to pull them.
Yes the OBDII plug will allow you to pull all the codes as long as the scanner can read the system.

On the not for the pnp switch, what is the best priced place I can buy it at. I am preparing myself for the hit, and so far I've found it for over $150...

Thanks

****UPDATE****

Ok so I have replaced the pnp switch, only to find out that the tranny is on it's last legs. From reading here, I assume the previous owner drove it with the bad sensor. I would be lying if I said the little that I am able to drive I did not think it was possibly even better than my old bmw... I guess I will replace the tranny, and go from there...

what is code p1868?

Thanks

You know what I think I wrote down the code incorrectly, I will check again. But basically when I did look it up it meant that there was wiring fault somewhere...

Also the switch to unlock the a/t shift lever keeps getting stuck "in" any tutorials on taking the boot out to fix?

Thanks for all your help,

I really like the way volvos feel...

There is 2 screws under the console lid under a cover.
Then you need to slide the cover around the e-brake handle to the drivers seat to remove and the console will come out.

tech,

Let me repeat back what you said for clarification, I have to remove the center console in order to remove the shift ****? The button on the shift **** gets stuck in everytime i press it.

Thanks

Sorry no the shift **** just pulls off. But you might need to remove the console to check the micro switch if you still have problems after fixing the ****.

Also if the override button is stuck down some you might have problems.

Check the bottom section of the button if it is cracked bad thats the problem.
