Losing coolant

Lately in my 98 S70 non-turbo i have been losing coolant NOT RELATED to the heater core so what is most likely the culprit.

water pump

You have to just hunt it down. It has to be leaking out somewhere, either static or under pressure. My 850 started leaking about a month ago and I was thinking water pump. Well, it turned out to be a $20 upper radiator hose. I have also seen Volvos leak a little from the thermostat gasket, took me nearly 6 months to find that one.

To see if it's the water pump, pull the timing belt cover. Other than that, you have to pop the hood, look and listen.

Best thing to do is find someone that can add pressure to the system to find the leak.

If it turns out to be an upper radiator hose be very careful how you go about taking the hose off as it could break the neck of your radiator. I would suggest you take a razor and cut the hose before pulling on it.

thanks everyone, one thing for sure it not hose related,so I,ll take TECH,s advice and have someone look at it for pressure.

Expansion tank cap? Start with that as the entire cooling system depends on its correct operation and its cheap to replace.

IT,s not related to tank nor hoses.

My daughter had a bad cap. It was split, I noticed it when I opened the hood and reached for it.

As for the upper radiator hose... If the radiator is that brittle, it needs to be replaced anyway.

Slow coolant leak?

I've had numerous points of failure in cooling system. Check out my post under s70 forum for more detail.

If you don't smell anything inside the cabin, still check under the DRIVER side floor mat for coolant stains. My o-rings failed on the heater hose connections throught the firewall.

If your cabin is dry, my resevior tank had a split seam on the small return hose barb. A real hard one to find.

I was checking coolant levels every week and recording how much I was adding over time (10-20 ml/wk) to figure out the problem...quite the pain.

mine was an expansion tank leak, the hose nozzles were so bad they turned to crystal when I removed the hoses
