Need New AC Compressor
Hi,
I recently picked up a 98 S70 and I need a new AC compressor. The local mechanics down here in Dallas are quoting me a ridiculous price to replace it, which is twice as much as I was quotedby a mechanic in Michigan. Therefore,I am trying to buy my own and have someone install it for me. My question is: How do I find out how many grooves my AC compressor is supposed to have? I'm finding compressors with one, two, or six grooves for the 98 S70. I can't find the information in my manual and I just don't know how else to get the information.
Thanks in advance for anyone that can point me in the right direction.

Hi trompistajose,
Welcome to the forum - I've just gone through buying a new compressor for my V70 and I posted some pictures of the project here: https://volvoforums.com/m_62590/tm.htm. I'm sure it would be very similar for the 98 S70.
Anyway, to answer your question -I assume by grooves you mean on the pulley that is turned by the serpentine belt. If so, it should be 6 grooves. I found it for $300 rebuilt and $400 new on www.eeuroparts.com and $15 more each on www.discountacparts.com. I bought my compressor from the second site along with the new accumulator (akareceiver/dryer) and orifice tube (aka thermal expansion valve), because they take off $20 if you buy both.
I'm not sure how you are finding compressors with one or two grooves, but if you want to be sure, you can pop your hood and take a look at the underside of the belt and count the grooves. It should be on the left side of the engine when facing the car. While you are under there you should take a look at the compressor (lower left side) and see how the bolts are mounted (ear vs direct) so that you know which to order. See the last post in this thread for a description of the difference.https://volvoforums.com/m_64532/tm.htm
Hope you can find someone to install it for you and you save some money - I saved a bunch by buying the parts and installing them myself.

Hi,
FCP Groton of Connecticut also sells the A/C compressors, both new (OEM) and rebuilt. The price is pretty much the same as 99VV70's, so the difference comes as you find out the shipping charge.

I hope this is some reference to you.

The compressor is on that page also make sure you buy a receiver dryer as well.
Was looking at another source as well but they don't sell the compressors anymore.
