Default New to me S70...

Hi Guys new guy Here...

I think I just bought a 1999 S70 Turbo (no money has changed hands). It is a good price for my area (Daytona Beach, fl). I am excited about my Volvo, but don’t want to get caught up in the excitement and go broke fixing a “Good Deal”.

My first question is: Will a TPS code disable the ETC and turn on the MIL on this Volvo? The check engine light and ETS light are on. I scanned the ECM had 3 codes (didn't write them down) large EVAP leak, knock sensor at limit, throttle position sensor circuit "a". My scanner will not read ETC/ABS codes. Car ran get great on test drive, so TPS code was not current. Gas cap is factory and was tight…

I am pretty handy with wrenches so don't be afraid to get technical. Are there any “Known” issues I should be aware of or check before final purchase?

Something is wrong in the Auto HVAC 2 lights were flashing at start up, but it blew cold in none auto mode.

Thanks in advance for your help…

Thanks for the guidance gdog, However I have decided to get the car. I was a Benz tech in the 90’s. I have just recently quit turning wrenches (so I thought). So it is all just bolts and wiring, there will be a learning curve on how Volvo bolts and wires stuff up. So the experience you all have, a lot of Alldata time and some late nights should get me through.

Besides I haven’t made a really bad decision in a while, so maybe I am due.

So if anyone has advise for a new (to me) Volvo owner keep it coming…

Well since it's yours now you may as well fix it..

When you say ETC should i assume you meant ETS (electronic throttle system)? Aka ETM too.

If so recommend you look at post #12 here. This was first MY for the ETM and it is infamous for its issues.

As far as the EVAP leak you're gonna have to troubleshoot the system to find the leak; since you're an ex-Benz tech you should know how to do that. Might ck the evap valve first; they tend to stick open with age.

The HVAC is telling you there are codes set; ck your manual, might be instructions on how to read em out. Not sure you can on a '99 w/o a volvo scanner... Someone here will know.

Might want to ck the trans fluid too; do a search on this site; lots of info on that topic.

You didn't mention how many miles on the clock?

I got it this morning.150k on the clock. yes the ETS light. It did go out after I cleared the ECM codes, but came back on the next ign cycle. So far Check eng light is not back on. Needs motor mounts, really bad but other than that runs great. At 70 the trip computer say I am getting 25-28mpg...much better than the 13 out of my Yukon.

Thanks for the advise, i am heading out now to check the lights and i'll look at the tranny fluid too.
