Default P0734 p1618 codes

I bought a 2000 Volvo s70 GLT SE recently. The person I bought it from let it sit for close to 2 years, and it only has 87000 miles on it.
Close to a week after I purchased it, the check engine light came on and a flashing arrow. Showing codes for p0734 and p1618.
It does not shift up past 3rd gear, so I ride with high RPMs in the 65mph+ area. Intermittently, whenever I get to a stop sign/light, and I have to stop, the car starts to shake as if it is not shifting down. If I turn the car off and back on again, the problem stops and runs fine until it doesn’t. It does not do this every time. We have changed the ABS module and the PNP switch, as well as some other maintenance. Whenever we clear the codes, the car runs fine until the lights come back on. Sometimes, the flashing arrow goes off by itself and will stay off for about 200 miles.
We are trying to fix it ourselves rather than taking it to a mechanic due to being ripped off by mechanics before. We have not changed the transmission fluid yet, and it is black instead of pink/clear. Unfortunately, we are out of ideas. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Ok, both codes point to a transmission issue. First and foremost, change the transmission fluid and make sure you put the correct type in. Volvos use different types of fluid depending on the transmission. Get the codes erased and the check engine light turned off and drive to see if any of them come back. If they do, with the car OFF remove the transmission control module for a few minutes and the re-seat it making sure there are no bent pins on the module. The module is in the square black box in the engine compartment. One is the Engine control module and one is the transmission control module. See if that changes anything. If not it might be time to take it to a transmission shop and get it checked out.
