Default transmission problems

hi everyone!

I have 98 volvo S90, 2.9 liter, automatic with 115k miles.
I started experiencing some weird problems recently. Arrow indicating transmission problems started flashing and check engine light came on. Also light on the shifter itself is going back and forth between W (winter mode) and E (economy mode). I had it scanned with obd2 but no fault codes came up so I assume that check engine light is there just because of the arrow. Since tranny shifts nice and smooth, oil is redish and it's level is fine, I was wondering if there are any switches that control this? neutral switch perhaps?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes could be the PNP switch bad.
But there should be codes on the transmission if the lights are flashing.

thanks for your response!
Are you saying that obd2 should give me codes for the tranny when cel is on? Do you think that there is internal tranny problem so that I might have to change transmission itself? Arrow stopped flashing this morning but check engine light is still on and it's still not showing any codes, comes back with 0.
Also, where is the pnp located on this car and how hard is it to replace it?

The engine light lets you know there is codes in the transmission computer.
It will stay on till the codes in the transmisison are cleared.
The Volvo scanner with come up with a code "666 code in transmission computer"

The PNP switch is located on the right side of the transmission. It is kind of a pain to get the bolt loose and slide it off the selector shaft due to exhaust is close to the transmission.

But it can be done I do it all the time.

Ok, thanks!

I will buy new pnp tomorrow and try to install it myself. Let's say I install it succesfully, can I reset the cel by disconnecting the battery for few minutes? Or I need to go to a dealer to get it done?

Usually disconnecting the battery doesn't work but you can give it a try.

Tech, I installed new pnp switch today. It was a bit harder then it first looked, just like you'veexplained. It's funny but check engine light cleared by itself before I even installed new pnp so I dont know if this would help at all. It did look old, it was probably original switch because it wasall rustedso I guess it was worth it, if not for this problem then definitelyin a long run.

thanks for your help, will keep you posted how it goes from here
