Default s70 present for new driver check engine light running rough

OK just bought a s70 65k miles, Test drove excellent. going to be present on way to storage to hide for big day check engine light comes on and it starts running very rough.

Inside the car a funny smell. I turn off a/c shift to neutral give it a little fuel and it starts to smooth out.

But when back at idle in gear and starting to incrase speed running very rough. Very bummed out only days away from surprize.

It does this three times, kinda a funny smell rough idle no power. Get to destination and park it. It will start again right away seems to idle ok for a second then start rough idle again.

Next day "Today" start it up runs fine idles fine revs fine no time to take it for a test drive. But I would bet once it warms up same thing is going to happen.

Any thoughts?

Ordered basic tune up kit including reader, be in Thursday.

ordered.

Manual, wires, air filter, fuel filter, ditributor cap, rotor, plugs, and computer air hose.

Hi Gary, welcome to VolvoForums.

What model did you get? Year & Trim.

The first thing you need to do is get the codes read. Most states allow you to get them read at local auto parts store. Once you have the codes post them here, without them, all efforts are pretty much wasted.

Default rough running

It is a 1998 s70 non-turbo, automatic.

I also ordered a coil. The reader will be here tomorrow and I will post the readouts.

Thank you

Default time is gowing shorter

OK, went to work on present and the battery was dead. Got a new battery, my fault left dome lights on during the day.

Installed new battery no stored codes. And the radio needed a code called Volvo dealer where it was purchasd and they gave me the code, nice.

Tried to get it to have same problem with no luck. Except once it kind of stumbld taking off from a light. I figured maybe some bad gas so refuled with 93 octane.

Have tune up stuff going to do it this weekend. Any tricks on changing the fuel filter?

When oil does everyone like. Florida synthetic or regualr staight of multi?

Thanks in adavance

I like to use synthetic blend because I'm in the Northeast with a turbo (or two) car(s). I'd suggest synthetic blend to keep sludge at bay, too.

Default update

Did not get a chance to do everything yet. Still need to change oil, change trans fluid, change fuel filter and install coil.

But even before I changed the wires and plugs and air filter the car started running excellent.

I would guess bad left over gas from sitting. Running great right now...

Thanks
