Default Snapping Sound & Car Wont Move in Reverse or Drive

1999 S70 awd (around 99,000 miles)

So today I am getting ready to head back to my apartment from my parents house and both of them are standing out on the sidewalk to say good bye...

Well I put the car in REVERSE because my dad's Jeep is parked in front of me and we all hear this loud SNAPPING sound. So I put it in PARK immediately. I try REVERSE again and the car wont budge an inch. I put a little gas on it still no luck.

I put it in PARK again. Then I go and put it in DRIVE as my dad suggested to see if it would move forward. Again we hear the loud SNAPPING sound. It wont budge in DRIVE either.

So now my car sits out on the street motionless because it can't be moved.

I cannot fix this myself I know this and even if it was possible I wouldn't want to undertake it as I am not that mechanically inclined to do it. What could be the possible outlooks here? What could be the possible problems what snapped or broke?

My guess would be one of the axles broke or the end popped out of the outer joint.

How does the shifter feel? Does it feel like it is broken loose?

Stealership without looking at it seems to think the brakes locked up.

Well it turns out the E-brake was ON. Well I never use the E-brake ever. I mean I never use it. I have a automatic tranny and never park on steep hills.

However the stealership suggests that the E-brake is fully on. Even though the E-brake handle is fully DOWN.

So they are going to replace the cable on it and replace some brake shoes too.

So now the question becomes how does an E-brake come ON without ever using it?

Not sure I would think more along the lines of the E-brake shoe material coming loose and locking the wheels.

Just got an e-mail from my dad who says this is what they said...

"It was the emergency brake. the pads worked loose and jammed when you backed up
(on the left) it needs a new set (left and right comes in a set) and new cables , they are corroded and bind up when pulled."

I guess basically the shoe material came off like I had thought when you said e-brake.
Atleast it did not happen when you were driving down the road. It would have caused alot of damage.
