Default Volvo S70 ABS module replacement cost

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and have some questions for anyone who has had their ABS module replaced. I have a 1998 S70 GLT with 128,000 miles which needs to have the ABS module replaced. My Volvo specialist mechanic, whom I trust and has been servicing my car since I bought it 6 years ago, tells me it will cost $1,000 to replace the ABS module. I'm uneasy about this, since the car appears to be worth about $1500. I know he is more expensive than many others, but his knowledge of my car and skill in diagnosing/repairing my car have kept me a loyal customer over the years.

My questions: For those of you who have had this repair, does this price seem too high? What have you all paid for this repair?

I read another post about "do it yourself" ABS module replacement, but that's beyond my comfort zone. I called my friend's Volvo mechanic who said, without yet seeing the car, said he'd estimate the repair at his shop to be $700-$850. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Maybe you can order a rebuilt one and have your shop install it for you.
This is a decent guy to order one from.

that is what the shop where I work at charges. I know you can get them cheaper via shipping out for rebuild.

Default Midwest Modules

I got an ABS from Midwest for my 1999 Volvo S70. I installed it in less than 5 minutes.

By the way, I am not a mechanic and have no real mechanical skills and I could still do it easily.

Total cost was about $100.

Instructions and even a tool were sent with the ABS that I sent back.

Highly recommend this.

I am sending mine to midwest to be repaired $55 instead of buying one of his already repaired units.

I got the e-5 torx socket from O'rielly auto parts. They didn't have it in stock but had it the next morning after I ordered it. $2.99 plus tax - no shipping charge. Its a Lisle part number 26770 E-5 Torx socket (1/4" drive).

It was indeed very easy to remove - but you have to have that E-5 socket. Just open the cap on the wire connection all the way back and it will disconnect from the module.

I'm mailing it in the morning and hope to have it back within a week depending on how slow the post office is.

I used him a few years back and was 100% satisfied. He even put a little happy sticker on the returned unit. IIRC, it cost me $120.

I mailed it on Monday and received my module back today (Friday). Five days is super fast turnaround.

My abs light is now off (I think my brake light was on before too - anyway its off) and my speedometer works regularly!

Cost this way was $55 for rebuild, $3.20 for the socket and $7 or $8 for shipping to Midwest (Midwest covers the return shipping). So the total cost was no more than $67.

if this mechanic that you trust quoted you $1,000 for that ABS,I can tell you he,s has been milking you for the longest, any honest mechanic should tell you, what the best option is for you based on what your car value is,you can purchase a NEW ABS on Fleabay for less then 200,and remove a few screws and install it yourself, you can buy a rebuilt one for even less.

Then if you wanted to help him out,why quote him prices from your Shop,it,s not like he,s coming to your shop.

All good advice but this is an 11 month old thread. He's probably fixed it by now.

I just put one from Midwest ABS in too. The hardest part was getting the electric cables disconnected because I couldn't find the release.
