00 S80 GOOD OR BAD

RE: 00 S80 GOOD OR BAD
Well I"m not sure what to say. Personally I would not buy an S80 older than 04. My daughter has a 99 and has had quite a bit of trouble. They had throttle body problems from 99-01 is something I have read on this board and other boards as well. When my daughter asked the mechanic at the Volvo dealership what she should get, he said stay away from the S80. She looked for something else and could not find anything she liked near as much for less than about $25K. She only paid about $13K for hers more than a year ago with only 40,000 miles on it and it's the T6. She still has it becasue it is such a nice car. Personally I would look at the 98 V/S70's or something newer than the 01's. Don't know if this helps or not.

My first question is: Is this the T6 model? If not, which?

NO DO NOT BUY A S80 VOLVO FROM 1999 TO 2003 AND HERE IS WHY.

Motoring - Electronic throttle causes headache for VolvoElectronic

Gothenburg, Sweden - Cars that unexpectedly stall due to a suspected
faulty electronic throttle have caused a headache for Swedish automaker
Volvo.
Thousands of vehicles assembled between 1999 and 2001 may be affected and
could force Volvo to issue a customer recall. Models affected are five and
six-cylinder versions of the S60, V70, XC70 and S80 series.
Volvo Car South Africa has taken note of the potential problems with the
electronic throttle assembly on 1999 - 2001 vehicles, it said in a
statement.
As with all matters of this nature Volvo Car SA takes its lead from Volvo
Car Corporation in Sweden, and will contact affected customers should a
recall be launched.
Any issues related to the electronic throttle that were brought to its
attention, it promised, would be handled with the necessary consideration.
In Sweden alone some 120 000 cars may be affected, although the Swedish
Automobile Association hasn't noted any increase in this fault.
"If customers suffer from stoppages they should contact a Volvo dealer and
get assistance to rectify it," said Volvo Car Corporation spokesman
Christer Gustafsson.
He added that Volvo Cars, owned by Ford, is still considering whether it
would recall cars or extend its warranty.
In the US about 300 000 vehicles are estimated to be equipped with the
electronic throttle in question, although the problem seems mainly to have
affected Volvo owners in California.
Authorities in that state were said to be urging Volvo to extend the
warranty on these components.
Media reports said that in one year Volvo spent some $13.5-million (about
R80 million) as a goodwill gesture cleaning or replacing 27 200 throttles
on traded-in cars. – Sapa-DPA

ojala,
Please do not infiltrate and flood the forum. Post your complaint (which is rather unwarranted) only once. People do not want to come to this forum and see several of your futile, useless and pointless posts. Remember - post with a purpose, not with mindlessness.

RE: 00 S80 GOOD OR BAD
I have a 2000 S80, and I absolutely love the vehicle. It's a smooth ride that seems to be made for the long road trips. I have had no issues and perform all normal maintenance in order to avoid the big issues. The problem with cars is usually not the car itself, but the negligence of the driver.

I also own a 2000 S80 T6 and have owned it for the last 15,000kms
Visit this link to see a log of faults and the mileage when it occured.
http://www.volvo-forums.com/2000-Vol...e12-cid231.htm
As you can see there has been minimal faults and any were quite minor.
The mileage is high and the vehicle is still on its original ETM and transmission. Although this will eventually have to be replaced, so does every other moving part of most cars.
Any perception about reliability means that it is priced accordingly. A real bargain.

RE: 00 S80 GOOD OR BAD
My S80 has only 60k on it and has given me many problems to fix which I would say are the result of poor workmanship. If you are really stuck on this car, this get an extended warranty. www.Warranty4wheels.com will sell one which even covers leaking gaskets ( a must ) for around $2100.00 which covers 4 years and another 60k miles with zero deductible. Out of warranty work I have spent about 1200 and have only had the car about 3 months.
The engine does have a loy of power, and because of the large depreciation of this car, you can get a $45,000 car for almost nothing. A BMW or Merc would be 2-3 times as much with the same retail.
the S80 has a lot of bells and toys and is a good match of sport and sedan. But be prepared for problems..

RE: 00 S80 GOOD OR BAD
I would absolutely stay away form a 99 s80 for many of the reasons listed above. The other beef I have w/ the s80 is the trannies. I've seen far too many take a crap on themselves. Defintaly not normal. I had a very experieced volvo tech of 28 years tell me the trannies were built by GM, much like the cadillac trannies. You can see the problem there I don't remember the specifics but the trannies definately were not Volvo's best idea and have since come back to haunt them and their owners.

RE: 00 S80 GOOD OR BAD
Funny, have you ever noticed that these auto forums are generally opulated by people who B*TCH about how they got a bad car? I have an 02 S80 T6, and I did have some turbo control spring replaced under warranty, a couple of software updates, none htat ever left me stranded. The car is comfy, fast, decent on fuel and safe for my kids to ride in. Enjoy. [8D]

RE: 00 S80 GOOD OR BAD
I have a 2000 S80 T6 for sale as we speak. It only has 46000 on it and a 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. I havn't had any real problems with it. I've had the ETM replaced under warranty but no other problems. Think about this one instead of the one with 80 some thousand on it.
