Default 03 S80- Another ABS Thread

First time poster, I have been sifting through this forum for the last week after buying a 2003 Volvo S80 for a commuter car.

Its seems to have typical S80 issues, though I did not get the fix most people did. First up is the ABS Module. The lights come on for the "Brake" and "ABS" and the warning in the text screen. ODOMETER, TRIP(-----), CLOCK, TEMP and CRUISE do NOT work.

I replaced the module with a used one, and had absolutely no change. No one seems to post their fixes for this situation, so what could cause all these issues but not be resolved by replacing the ABS Module?

I appreciate any help, I must get this to pass state safety inspection before I can register it.

No responses, so I had to break down and go to the dealer. I have to say this vehicle has been a pretty negative experience.

My ABS light does not count as a Check Engine Light, so there is no free 1 hour diagnostics. So I will have to shell out $120 for them to tell me it needs to be programmed, $60 (1/2 hr labor) and $110 for the program just to get this ABS light to MAYBE turn off so I can pass the safety inspection.

Whatever bulletproof Volvos there were before, I feel like this has been a mistake due to the fact that even if I CAN fix it myself, I still have to bend over to the dealer to finish my installation. Even $200 to turn on the fog lights...

Actually all cars like this need a good diagnostics equipment.
So if you want to fix this car yourself you need to buy DiCE and install VIDA.

BTW.
if you have DiCE I can reprogram your ABS module via internet.

I really appreciate that. I was under the impression that this would have to be completed at the dealership. I will purchase a DiCE today, if you have any suggestions on which is the best (reasonably priced) that would be great. There seems to be a few on Amazon, but I am not certain yet what the differences are.

Just ask a seller to unsure that this DiCE should be detected in Windows as DiCE-206751.
And it should use the standard DiCE driver that is shipped with VIDA installation (not customized one).
If that is not true after delivery you can return it.

Default Resolution

I am happy to write a resolution to this thread, which did not include me getting raked over the coals by the dealership.

I was able to pick up a working DiCE and 2013A VIDA from eBay for a reasonable price.

A HUGE thanks to DoubleBug(! ) for programming my ABS module. This fixed: ODOMETER, TRIP, CRUISE CONTROL, TRACTION CONTROL, ABS LIGHT, BRAKE LIGHT, and my ability to read/scroll through the DIM using the stalk.

OTHER ISSUES:
Instant MPG/ AVG MPG work
TRIP works
BUT AVG MPH does not. Reads 0 or -, and after driving 2 hours @ 80 mph ="1"
DIM has common issue of flickering and resetting constantly

Try to reset it first. Select avg and press reset button for a several seconds.

That is common issue for your MY. Complete resolution is to buy a bit recent one.
Just find some used one from 2004 MY. Just be sure it has green connector.

It should work OK without programming (if from 2004 MY). Yes it will show different mileage but with strong desire it can be corrected to be original.

I will try the reset, I did it for the AVG MPG, I guess I assumed it would reset all of them.

Now for my follow up question about the DIM. In my haste and ignorance I bought a used but working DIM from a 2001 S60. It does have a green plug, however when I removed my DIM I realized the part numbers do not match, and the only gauge that works on the S60 DIM is the fuel. I am not really worried about the Odometer, really just need it to track oil changes and PM at this point.

I was not able to find much that matched my S80 (VCC P/No 8637995), nor a good list of compatibility of DIMs. Is is possible to reprogram the S60 Dim (P/No 9499670)to the S80?

No. There is no firmware for this panel for 2003 MY.

Default DIM Resolved

Looks like I have knocked out the two most common issues causing the gauge cluster to light up. I did the "hot air method" albeit second hand with the help of a local TV repair shop. We cleaned the board (alcohol works great to remove the sealant from the Motorola chip, no need for acetone or nail polish remover), he put some flux on the chip and applied heat. Whole process took about 15 minutes, and $50 (sounds steep, but it is very reasonable in comparison to the other options). The DIM was completely dead, the only thing which worked was the CEL light. Originally it just flickered on and off, turn indicators did not always work, and the Air Bag Urgent warning. Everything is in normal working condition now.

Still need to clear out the Airbag warning with the DiCE, though I am confident with the help of this forum and its members it will pass Safety Inspection now.
