Default 2001 S80 T6 - Almost convinced

Hello all,

I am presently considering a 2001 S80 T6 with 80,000 miles for $11,500.
Its clean and drives well, it is not a Volvo dealer and while test driving the sun roof and interior lisghts would not work.
After reading many posts here I figured this could be resolved with the remote entry.

Does this price sound good? I love the car but I am sitting on the fence as to whether i should buy it.
Could a garage clear these error code/ messages before i looked at it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards

Bob

Pull a carfax on it, have a mechanic put it up in the air and check it out from the bottom up. Volvo's in my experience run forever if they are taken care of....80000 miles is about the time to replace the timing belt, plugs, coolant, trans service. If it's in good shape and has been kept maintained then your getting one heck of a deal. I bought a 97 850 GLT with 84000 miles and it ran for 5 years with nothing going wrong on it....traded it off at 150000 miles, part of me wishes I had kept it!

Just check it all out and if it's good....you got urself a good deal.

Update.

I bought it with an extended warranty.
So far so good, damn comfortable, and quiet. Although 4CD changer is not enough i will have to get something to play my mp3's.
It had a few of the optional extras, and seems a lot of car for the money.
Keeping my fingers crossed, I hope its a good one.
This forum nearly persuaded me not to buy it, some of the horror stories scared my wallet.

Regards

Bob

I have a 2000 S80 Non-Turbo with 60,000 on it, and I love the car. I bought it for my wife, and she has really enjoyed the ride and safety of the car.

I do not have an extended warranty, although I do feel that you made a good choice with picking one up. I have been meticulous with my maintenance on the vehicle, and beyond a software upgrade, I have had no troubles with the vehicle.

A lot of people have a lot of problems with these vehicles, well I haven't, and I'm extremely happy with the vehicle!

I got a 2000 S80 T6 for my wife two years ago. It had less that 30K miles on it at the time. We're pretty close to 40K now and the only problem we had was the power steering rack (should have taken the extended warranty [:@]) and an ABS module that went flaky (fortunately I was able to get that repaired for $700 LESS than what the dealership wanted ). Aside from that, we love the car.

Come on admit it, ya gotta love that Twin-Turbo under the hood.

Enjoy it Bobby.
I am on my 2nd t6 and it has been very relaible and fun. I bought a 2002 t6 last year with 12k on it for $22,500 with the warranty Coudn't pass it up.
Good idea getting the extended warranty. I just had a $1200 airbag bill completely covered! Makes you feel like you did something smart.
Safe driving.

Update.

All is going great!

I even let my mother in law drive it today, she loves it, wants me to find one for her next year.

My only negative thought is the CD player, I wish it could play MP3's. I got used to having 150 sounds available in my last car, though this sounds a whole lot better.

Any advice on cleaning the lug nuts? I have a coulple that are corroded. Whats the best stuff to use? Any one know the cost of a replacement windscreen?

Cheers

Bob

If I look under my hood it says 2.9litres....as far as I know there were both 2.8 and 2.9 twin turbos. If memory serves me correctly I believe the XC-90 utilizes the 2.9 twins as well.

I will have to see if I can dig up more info as well.
Maybe they used different Cams between the 2 that made the reading a little different.

I was having asearching for S80 information on the web and found the following torrent.

http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3512164/VADIS_volvo

Its the VADIS DVD, not sure how useful this would be for me, since I have not experience working on cars. But I thought someone here might find it useful, I noticed that "tech" has used screen shots from it.

Regarding the engine size question:

According to VADIS:

1999 - 2001 S80 T6 are 2.8L (B6284T)
2002 -2005 S80 T6 are 2.9L (B6294T)
In 2006 they dropped the 2.9L Turbo (for N. Americas at least).Only the 2.5T was offered. 2007 will be a whole new engine line-up.

The odd part is that in the detail specs they do not list specifications on the B6294T engine.

Here's the infor from the Volvo US web site for 2002 - 2005:

Engine:

S80 2.9
[blockquote]
Transversely Mounted, 2.9-Liter, 6-Cylinder, Double Overhead Cam
Compression Ratio 10.0:1
Horsepower (SAE net) 194 @ 5,200 rpm
Torque (ft./lbs. SAE net) 207@4,200 rpm
[/blockquote]

S80 T-6
[blockquote]
Transversely Mounted, 2.9-Liter, 6-Cylinder, Double Overhead Cam, Twin Exhaust-Driven Turbochargers w/ Intercooler
Compression Ratio 8.7:1
Horsepower (SAE net) 268 @5,200 rpm
Torque (ft./lbs. SAE net) 280 @5,000 rpm[/blockquote]

Hope this settles the debate.

I'm not a car mechanic, however there aresome things I will do myself. The information is useful to make you a better informed customer. The parts guide in the system is great! I think that is worth the time for the download. Just note that, the VADIS DVDs do have an expiry date, however it can be easily over-ridden .

For the lug bolts, are you referring to referring to the hex heads that are corroded? The threads, can be cleaned with a wire brush. I use a bit of anti-seize compound to protect the exposed threads (you will likely see varying opinion on this). The hex heads came in two types, one was a brushed finish, the other was chrome plated (I have the chrome plated). I don't have any recommendations on cleaning the bolt heads, but here's an idea (I'm assuming you have alloy wheels). If you don't have lock bolts for your wheels, get a set of lock bolts. Then you can replace your four worst, corroded lugbolts with the lockbolts.
The bolts should be
[blockquote]
M14 x 1.5 Thread with a 19mm hex head.
1.290" (32.600mm) Length.[/blockquote]
I'm using McGard lock bolts (McGard Item #27000). Sorry no comment on the Windscreen other than to check with you insurance companies policy for replacement. I'm sure an OEM replacement will be mighty expensive.

Good luck.
