Default ball joint replacement

Hey Tech---had my '00 S-80 in for routine check-up primarily for a noise in passenger side front end - have heard all of the horror stories about "expensive" parts, etc. but find working on the car not that bad, in fact rather easy and interesting - anyway was told I need a passenger side ball joint and that I would need to purchase a new lower control arm in order to get the ball joint yet I see ball joints on most parts websites - help me decipher the truth from fiction, are the ball joints able to be replaced or is there the need for the control arm????

profcharlie - 2000 S80 and loving it......

Default RE: ball joint replacement

The Balljoint is replacable on your car.
But it is pressed into the Hub abbembly. You will have to hammer it out then Carefully hammer it in.
There is a special tool to install it.

The S70's and 850's are the cars you need to replace the control arm for the Balljoint.

you will need a slide hammer or a air hammer to get it out, there is a speical tool, also the control arm will need to be pryed down and back into place, let the dealer do it..

itll be 1.3 labor and 60 for the part.

Default New Ball Joints

I'm trying to finish installing new ball joints. The old ones had torx fittings on the end of the stud to hold it still while tightening the nut. The new ones do not have the torx fitting. I was able to tighten the driver's side without it and (apparently) without turning the stud. However, the passenger side turns the stud and the nut doesn't tighten. How do I tighten that one?
