Yesterday I replaced both ball joints and wanted to share some pictures and a couple of lessons learned.
The ball joints are a press fit in the wheel knuckle and although I didn't have any of the recommended special tools I didn't have a problem knocking them out but you have to be careful with bolt hole alignment as the new ball joints are being driven in.
I initially attempted the ball joint replacement with just the lower control arm disconnected but didn't have room or good leverage to drive the new ball joints back into the wheel knuckle. Took the wheel knuckle off the car to do the job.
Driving the old ball joint out is no problem, part of the ball joint mounting flange extends past the wheel knuckle so there is a lip for a punch to drive out the ball joint.
Driving the ball joint back in is where you need to be careful with bolt hole alignment. I initially used the old ball joint bolts as guides as I was driving in the ball joint in but damaged the threads of the bolts and the alignment was good so removed the bolts and eyeballed the alignment from the start. If the bolts holes weren't aligning as the ball joint was being driven in I pulled it out and started over.
I used an 2 1/2 to 2 1/4 exhaust pipe adpater from Pep boys and a block of wood as a driver tool to start the ball joint in the wheel knuckle hole and then used a brass punch and hammer to drive the ball joint in the rest of the way. The exhaust pipe adapter didn't hold up too well to the pounding but was cheap ($2.50).
Make sure the alignment of the ball joint bolt holes doesn't allow any bolt thread contact to the side of the holes in the ball joint mount flange. Any contact and the bolt threads will be damaged and then damage to the aluminum threads in the wheel knuckle would occur.
One other thing to be careful of is counterholding the ball joint shaft while tightenting the nut to avoid damaging the boot. I say this because one of the original ball joint boots looks like it was damaged from being twisted too far.

RE: 2001 V70 Ball Joint Replacement
My V70 is at the dealer to have a new key made and program a new keyless entry (to the tune of $360 total!!!... wiping blood off of my back side...) programmed since I had none with I purchased the car new.
I had them spend time poking around the car as well for $108/hr in labor and they came up with a short list for my repair pleasure.
Control arm bushings $960
Auto-dim rear view mirror replacement $700
Siren circuit board replacement $494
Seat control module $760
So... I thanked them kindly for doing a better inspection then I can do as a weekend tinkerer. I will live with a seat that only functions for a few seconds when I first get in the car. I will tint my rear windows for a heck of a lot less than $700. I can deal without the alarm system functioning properly (they assured me it will not disable the ignition... it may just occasionally give me a yellow warning message). I ordered replacement control arms (for ease of home installation) and ball joints online for under $263 (a >70% savings to do it myself) and will spend a couple of hours in the near future performing that safety/function repair while enjoying some solo time in the garage.
This thread and .pdf file will come in handy since i plan to replace the ball joints while replacing the control arms. Thank you a ton!

For the alarm if you don't want to hear it at night , it's simple just unplug the siren; and it's location is in the inner fender (passanger side) take off the wheel and drill the rivets 5 or 6 and then there is an acces to the siren. just unplug the connector and you're done. And by the the siren IS the problem i just replaced mine months ago.

repair pleasure !
i'm glad to see the cost of repairs in the states ($) isn't that different to here in the uk . i went to my local volvo dealer and parked in the wrong area in my wifes 97' renault megane, imediatly a salesman came across the forcourt and explained he'd have to sell my car if i left it parked there . i replied , "at your prices i'll take 10% after tax then we'll both be happy".
lets just say i'd gone to spend my £50,000 on a xc 90 ? there's no "please , or would you mind sir" .just hey look , old car ,no money attitude.
i think the answer is , if you paid premium prices for premium cars , then why are you paying again for parts that to be honest shouldn't be malfunctioning?
i cant imagine you were "thrashing or abusing the alarm, or going dimcrazy with the rear view mirror" to be honest they should replace them out of embarisment! , you know my company owner has an aston martin , and when he has a problem like, "ashtray full warning light" they send a curtain sided truck out to recover it.
and when i did get to the parts counter the guy told me for every 10 parts he looks for , only 1 will get sold!
you know the old volvo saying ," if it's broke ,leave it broke!"lol
cheers

Daren; that's hilarious. I've had the same experiences. Because I look young, I automatically have no money, no good job or no good credit. You almost have to beg to get someone to show you a nice car until they check your credit or find out what you do for a living, and then they act like you are God. Pretty amazing.

Ball Joint Replacement Nice Write-up
I just did a good friend of mines ball joints, I got some longer bolts at a hometown hardware store and cut the heads off of them and used them as the guides put a little bit of neversieze on them, and used a piece of black iron pipe as the driver, ( pipe nipple from Home Depot ) they went in without a bit of trouble. Mine are next, this coming weekend.
