i have a 99 S80 T6 with bent valves. I gave the head to a machine shop to clean and put new valves. now how do i time the intake and exhaust cam shafts. I have locked both shafts in place. But how do i align the cams step by step

 

I am a new member and I had the same issue with my S80 2.9. After searching the forum for days, I was able to find all the answers. I will try share my experience with you.

First of all, I would like to thank everybody in the forum who posted extremly valuble information.

You do not need to purchase any special tools! However, you will need a tool to lock the cam VVT unit is attached to. I used the following link to create a simple tool:

There is a slot at the other end of each camshaft. The slot on the intake shaft should be horizontal- above an imaginary center line, and the slot on the other cam should horizontal - below an imaginary center line. This may vary depending on the engine, but one should be up and the other down with respect to a center horizontal line.

Be sure to lock the cams, especiallly the one VVT unit is attached to.

Align the marks and install the belt.

You must set the VVT timing!!!! I found the following article extremly helpful:

I didn't set the VVT timing thinking that all should be fine if I put everything back as before. I could not start the car. There was no compression in any of the cylinders. Then I realized that the VVT rotated one of the cams without disturbing the timing marks. I was extremly lucky as it could have bent some of the valves.

There are some software you can purchase on ebay that has most of the steps.
