Oh tech, also.. how much will the t belt + serp belt job be up at the shop where you work?

i talked to my mechanic here in tampa and he said hes not sure if he wants to take on that job, he said its just too much trouble and time consuming, as he did it in a v70 and he said it took way longer than planned

Yes that is what you need.

I can't believe that he doesn't want to do the job!!!!!
I would have to check from work to see what just the labor would be.
If all else fails I will do it home for about $200.00.

if you dont mind me asking, whats the difference between these 2 timing belt kits...
both say they are for 02 s80 2.9l's

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2000-...spagenameZWDVW

vs

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2000-...spagenameZWDVW

the second one is 50 dollars more but it is
**This kit if for use with Hydraulic Tensioner Systems** NOT FOR MECHANICAL TIMING BELT SYSTEMS
Thing is im not really sure if i have a hydraulic tensioner system, i assume i dont but just looking to make sure...

thanks

Your car has a mechanical tensioner.
Get a Continental belt that is the OEM belt best in my opinion.

Only some 1999's have a hydrolic tensioner.

To be honest tech, same deal on my end, very very busy weekends...
I dont really plan to be doing much driving between now and the end of the april, right after that I may have to make a run to miami and quite a bit of driving around tampa though so I guess once it could be done sometime before then..

I still have the oil leak worry but I guess thats a secondary problem, once i keep enough oil in the car I should be fine for the while..

just let me know how your schedule is looking and I guess we will just change the spark plugs while were at it...

Hi tech, visited the mechanic today and hes quoting me near 600 for the job (T belt, idler, tensioner, s-belt and he claims i have a leaking valve cover gasket)... sounds like quite a bit so if possible, il prefer to do the job by you. How much is the valve cover gasket and how much extra labour would it be to change? Is it a big job?

Let me know how its looking...
PS. If we are doing the work, any chance we can do the spark plugs, fuel filter, and upper torque arm bushing while we are at it?

Thanks again tech, keep me post

I will want to see it myself for the leaks.
The Valve cover(Really called cam cover) very very rarely ever leaks. It is a really big job like I thikn 5 to 6 hours or so.
Maybe just the seals are leaking but I want to see it myself.
We will have to meet up soon.

Its no problem tech.. whenever is good for you, either on fridays or on the weekend I can work with....
This new mechanic has a pretty popular place near the univ, alot of professors go to him and so on so hes well respected around the area, I trust the guy, i would just prefer a volvo specialists opinion on it..

I have all the t belt parts already and UPS was supposed to deliver the S belt today but in typical fashion showed up to my place after 6pm.. so i wasnt home

you should be able to get all 4 of those parts replaced for less than 600. i took it to a volvo dealer and they did it for 300 even.

Thats my point, i just needed him to take a diagnostic look at things but i have no intention of doing the work at his place....
Im still thinking about the rear crankshaft seal, thinking if maybe i put the wrong oil, or i should have been using the high mileage oil all along etc... i think its just bad luck but i keep looking for a way to blame myself...

Anyway, i know the job shouldnt be over 300 so im wondering what hes on about... maybe because of the cam cover the price went up to 600?
isnt $95 an hour labour pretty steep for someone who isnt a volvo specialist? He says thats his rate for volvo but im sure there are independent volvo shops cheaper than that
