Default ECM/ETA "reduced engine performance" light

I have had the "reduced engine performance" light come on twice. Once I was just going down the highway and I felt a little studder, then it drove ok but b/c it was in "limp mode" I simply was forced to drive slower. Second time the warning light came on I was at a stop light and idle was irratic and finally stalled. Both times the car drove fine after switching the car off and restarting.
Volvo dealer checked it (literally, not just read the stored codes- if there were any?) and said loose connections at the ECM and ETA (I think on the older cars the ETA was called an ETM). They said they need to replace the wiring harness connectors at both the ETA and the ECM.
Anyone have any experience doing this and is it something a DIY'er with moderate mechanical skills could do? The connector at the ETA looks really easy to get at but not sure about the ECM.

sugardoo, it is not big deal in such car if it comes rarely but it is better to know your problem. In my opinion if we follow the dealer's diagnose, I suggest buy CRC Electronic cleaner. Put the negative battery terminal off and disconnect those connections and clean them with a spray and do check if they are really loose, there are lots of tricks to get them tight.

Ok, sounds like a plan. Can you give me an idea of where the wire harness connection for the ECM is? I think the ECM is located on the passenger side of front engine area in a black box.
