Fob Programming to different ECU
I recently switched the engine on a 2010 Volvo S80. I retrieved the replacement engine from the junkyard. The head of the replacement engine has 2 additional sensors that do not exist on the blown engine. I initially assumed it will work. After doing all the work, the car would only run normal if the MAF sensor is disconnected. Come to find out that the replacement engine needs its own ECU part # 30788992. I retrieved the replacement ECU from the junkyard with the appropriate harness to connect from the new ECU to the new engine. Can anyone help with what will the next step be? Do I just call a locksmith to program the key to the new ECU?
Only call a locksmith if they happen to have a VIDA-DICE set up :-) Reprogramming keys usuallly requires a trip to the dealer. You may need to provide the VIN from the donor car as well. I'd start by giving a dealer or a full service Volvo shop a call to see if they can offer any assistance.
Yes, use the sensors and wiring harness from the old engine. DO NOT try anything else. You WILL NOT be able to get it to work (with any reasonable amount of energy/thought/time/prayers/$$$) any other way. Always use your existing sensors when installing a used engine (if they are different), and use your original wiring harness.
You WILL NOT be able to get a used ECU to work in your car (well, with enough $$$ anything can be done!) But please don't waste you time trying!
Good luck!
By the way the key is not programmed to the ECU - The key code is in the CEM, so I don't really know what you are asking.?? And - as far as I know - you can't "program an ECU" to another VIN (or engine in your case) using VIDA (that your "locksmith" a dealer or anyone with a subscription would have access to). A company such as Xemodex can - but I really don't think that is what you need.
