Default ecu programming question

Hi all,

[First, sorry about posting this on the C70 board by accident]

I'm new here and have a 2001 V70 T5 with a slight problem. My ecu has been acting up (got wet) and although it drives fine, my local (non-dealer) service guy can't keep the "urgent engine service required" light to stay off. In other words, the ecu has some kind of intermittent problem that keeps turning the light back on.

So, I bought a used ecu on ebay from a wrecked 2001 V70 T5 (with matching Bosch numbers). But my local Volvo dealer is telling me that they cannot "program" this used ecu to work in my car - that I would HAVE to buy a new ecu.

This sounds very suspicious to me, given that a Volvo dealer is able to sell you a replacement key (with embedded transponder) and program your ecu to accept that new key.

So what the deal? Am I just being fed a line by a dealer who either 1) doesn't know how to do what I want or 2) wants to sell me an $1100 ecu?

Thanks in advance for any help.

And if I should post this to a different catagory, let me know.

...Derek

Once the ECU is programmed to a car it is dead pretty much it will only work on the car it was programmed to.
You can program it to another car.It is a one shot deal.

Thanks for the independent confirmation.

Do you (or anyone else) happen to know what "ties" the ecu to the car? In other words, what keeps it from working in another car?

I believe there is a transceiver in/near the steering column that activates the transponder in the key, receives the key's "megamos" code, and sends that code to the ecu. But there must be another "code" somewhere in the car that the ecu also needs, which is the reason you can't just move the keys and ecu to another car.

Is that other code stored in the transceiver itself?

Default RE: ecu programming question

Just found out that the ecu is "imprinted" with the serial numbers of many (maybe all) of the other computer modules within the car. If these don't match up, the ecu won't operate.

A replacement ecu comes "zeroed" from the factory, and then goes through a configuration procedure at the dealer. The dealer can't do the zeroization, unfortunately.
