Unhappy Ignition Coils or Spark plug issue?

I own a 2000 Volvo s80 t6, a few days ago I decided to wash the engine with the hose, I let the car running while doing that and after let it run for about 5 minutes. When I shut the car off and turned it back on the car ran rough. I replaced an ignition coil and fixed it for a day then the next day another ignition coil went out. I replaced it and was working fine until I noticed it started shaking again. I'm not sure if another coil is going out again because all it does is run rough when the engine is idling or going in reverse. At high speed it runs normal Please help :/

I've encountered this on two occasions myself and decided for the future to be very careful about spraying water near the top of the engine. My situation cleared itself once the water evaporated. But if you do have a bad spark issue, a code reader will tell you which coil/cylinder combo is at fault. To verify if the coil is bad, first get it dried out, then swap with another coil/cylinder and see if the error travels with it.

If you are misfiring at low RPM, chances are good it's happening at higher rpm but the vibration becomes less noticeable at higher rpms. Misfire is not good for the emissions components, also tends to heat up the exhaust manifold more than it normally should be.

I have a misfire on my 99 s80 T6 on coil #1 with P0301 with emissions code. I have swapped coils, read the voltages with ignition on and at idle(2.5 for signal wire and 14.0 for hot wire), I have removed the coil and checked with a new plug while engine running. No spark from the #1 coil no matter if swapped with a functioning coil. I'm at a loss about where to look next.

Alright I got my codes checked and it turns out I had a multiple missfire. Probably caused by three coils that went out at different times. I've replaced one drove for a few miles and the next one blew ou. So far on the 3 rd one its driving well. What is odd is they blew out in order starting with #3 and ending with #5. Hmmmm.....

Default How many coils?

How many coils will end up being replaced? Do you just replace the one coil that misfires and then when the other fail you replace them too?

Before learning about the misfire issue I have now (05-S60) I replaced plugs and the fuel filter because of loss of power under a load, but then had someone check it only to find I had a misfire on coil #1 so I replaced the coil (boneyard), now 1 day later the misfire is on coil #3. Do I just keep replacing coils? Any help would be appricated.

BTDT...

I have 3 old spares I think... if you're interested in them, PM me. Came off a 2000 S80 non-turbo.

Coils will last xxx,xxx miles and they'll fail one after the other. Just keep replacing them with new ones if you can afford it. IPd and FCP sells the new OEM ones for under $60.

S60 with same issue but no misfire. Replace all coils and the plugs and see if that helps. Old coils had putty around them. Wonder if same thing happened and that was their fix. Ive had to replace 3 already and only had the car going on 2 yrs. Its running now but all these horror stories are not what i want in my future!

Why open a 8 year old thread?
3 coils on a 2 year old car? That's very odd. Generally I would suggest just replacing all the coils at once since they all have pretty much identical wear and tear and if one went. It's like replacing a flat out tire when all 4 have 80,000 miles..

I havent had the car that long. Once the first 2 happened i found putty around 3 of them. Tested all with a volt meter and the rest didnt have putty and tested fine. All 3 with putty failed. Kinda strange but with them costing 60 bucks ea and there are 6. You can do the math. Had to replace sparks plugs also. Just needed to get it back on the road as is my daily!
also nobody cares if it is 8 yr old thread as my problem is happening now.
