Default Just got my timing belt & Water Pump Replaced. Was I just luck they lasted so long?

Hi

I just got my timing belt and water pump replaced by a private volvo mechanic today on with 99 S80 2.9 with 245K miles on it. The last time I replaced the timing belt was in 2007 when the car had 117K miles on it. So was 12K miles overdue then and the belt was 8 years old. After that I replaced it at 245K miles. I was supposed to replace it at 222K miles. So I was 23K miles overdue. But the miles I put on it from 117K to 222K were all highway miles. This was the first time ever the water pump was replaced at 245K miles.

wow you changed the belt twice already?!?! those things are expensive to replace..well @ least you are following the maintenance schedule. the best thing is to check your manual to see the correct intervals, or call the Volvo dealer.

Not really. I don't understand your math but it seems like you replaced a 5 year old belt 23,000 miles overdue (that's just 20%). I use to take my 740 GLE 50% past the schedule all the time and never had a belt break. Now I did NOT have an interfierance motor in that car so head damage for them was rare.

If you rack up the miles fast you can usually go further on the belts. I never replace a water pump that isn't leaking. I've heard of them lasting 400,000 miles.
