Default Wish me luck on the timing belt job

I ordered a COMPLETE $329.00 kit from FCP for the timing belt/water pump job, with seals and other parts that come in the box.

I have NEVER done a timing belt other than once on my 1990 Celica I used to own. I was less worried because its a non-interference engine (5SFE).

Anyone want to put my mind at ease on this job?

I'm gonna have a buddy with me to help out.

I printed this write up off to guide us: http://volvospeed.com/Repair/timingbelt.php

Good write up?

I knocked out my Celica's T-belt in about four hours. What about this one?

Consider this a n00b prospective.

Pretend I have never done a timing belt job in my life at all.

I plan on doing the water pump too since its in the kit and I paid for it. What should I use as a sealer?

Aside from the write up, what special tools or supplies should I make sure we have on hand to get it done?

Drop some advice fellers!

Take Pictures BEFORE you remove the belts so we can see where the timing marks are. Please read my post, your input would be very welcome.

Okay.

Got back from my friends. Timing belt job went without a hitch!

We replaced:

--Timing belt
--Serp. belt
--Pulleys and tensioners
--Water pump and gasket.

We did not use any of the seals that came with the kit because none were leaking and we didn't feel like doing further work. Inside the timing cover was dry as a bone.

NOW...the fuel pump relay IS bad. Used a jumper wire and it ran fine. Disconnect the wire and it stalls. Put the relay in and its intermittent. We popped open the relay and the paddle doesn't always engage. That's going to get fixed soon.

Still has the random no start, but I think the PNP will fix that.

Aside from the front strut mount being bad, it rides like a DREAM. Could use new tires though. Handling is tight and fun.

Today was a good day

The timing belt is not all that hard. You really need to make sure that nothing moves once you have the timing belt off. If you are really worried, you could always pick up a cam locking tool to keep the cams from moving.

Other then that, it is the same as any other timing belt. Just take your time and you will do fine.
