Loss of power

recently I've noticed that my S80 doens't have too much power, after I step on the gas it take it a while to what it seems pick up pressure and then it'll go. I've had the transmission serviced, all seemed fine. There are no codes, no check engine lights, just a lack of power. I know its a heavy car but it never did this before. Also I've noticed that when I remove the shield from the bottom of the car, there is oil on it. the transmission was serviced and not leaking, the oil filter isn't leaking either, however there is oil on the bottom of the engince, not a huge leak but its leaving a little spot in my garage, is there somewhere I should look. The top of the engine is dry as can be, looks great actually. Please help!

RE: Loss of power

Have you given it a full tune up lately?
The oil could be coming from the Vent box. It could also be Power steering leak for the bottle.

RE: Loss of power

I haven't tuned it up in about ayear, what would constitute as a full tune up for this car? I have changed the plugs, air filter, oil change. The oil seems to be coming from the back of the engine.

RE: Loss of power

It could be. Or it could be a coil pack going bad.

It could also be the ETM going out.

Is it turbo or Non?

RE: Loss of power

Non turbo, what is the ETM?

tech 05-11-2006 08:53 PM

RE: Loss of power

ETM= Electronic Throttle Module. (No more throttle cable it is all electronic)

RE: Loss of power

The Dealer will have to do it.
Your car should be under the Extended Warranty Volvo just put out. 10 Years 200,000 miles.

But you will need to have codes for it in the system. They will download software first to see if it fixes it.

It fixes 99% of them.

RE: Loss of power

Whoa.... back to this extended warranty.... Where can we get info on this?

tech 05-13-2006 12:24 AM

RE: Loss of power

There was a post here on the forum.
If the throttle body goes bad it will get replaced under warranty.

If the car surges at idle and stalls take it in and complain about it.They will tell you upfront they might have to charge you a check out fee. But if it is because of the throttle body it will be done for free.

Give me some time to find the link and I will post it.

Or check with the Dealer for some Info.

Sparks plugs, is there any special type these 80's take? I have a 01 T6 and want to change to bosch plat +2 or+4 for increased spark. I've always ran bosch plugs. Do you recommend a spark plug to go in, or are we limited to volvo only plugs?

RE: Loss of power

They really like the Volvo but we have been using the Bosch Plat. at work without any problems.

RE: Loss of power

now you said it may be leaking from the vent box, where is this on the S80? it's starting to leak a bit more, but not enough to where I can tell on the dipstick or low oil pressure. Just can't find exactly where the leak is comming from. It just started in the fall and never stopped again... kinda annoying to tell you the truth.

RE: Loss of power

It is under the intake on the front of the enigne.
It will be like behind the A/C compressor. It is a black box.

RE: Loss of power

so should I just take it off, clean it and hope for the best?

tech 05-16-2006 08:38 PM

RE: Loss of power

I would replace it to be safe.

But remember you have to remove the intake to get to it.

RE: Loss of power

any place in perticular you recommend finding the vent box?

tech 05-17-2006 08:57 PM

RE: Loss of power

IM not really sure we always buy it from the Dealer.

Where ever you buy it from make sure you Get the Seals and Clamps as well.

RE: Loss of power

Checked the vent box, completely dry, no oil to be found. Seems like the leak is comming from the back of the engine but can't find it. I'm going to try and degrease the engine, hose it off and drive it around till I find a leak. Any more ideas tech?
