RE: question about changing the power steering reservior

I did this yesterday. Cost me about 90 bucks (53 for reservior, 33 for synthetic fluid and 2 hose clamps, and 3 bucks for a turkey baster lol)and an hour of my time, compared to the 200+ they wanted to charge at the dealership.

I managed the "Flushing" part by myself. I just taped the return hose onto an old milk jug and turned the car on for about 5 seconds or less and it drained the reservior through the pump. Got a tiny bit of air in there, but when I put on the new reservior, I put the synthetic stuff in there, turned the car on for 2 seconds, the second I saw greencoming out I shut it off and it looks like all the air cleared. Popped the return hose onto the new reservior, topped it off, and i was done. The liter bottle I got from volvo had just enough that I could flush the hoses with the new stuff and then still top the reservior off.

Drove it around to make sure nothing was leaking and it sounded good. It is so quiet compared to the last few months I had been driving with the hissing/squealing due to oxidization. Glad I finally got around to doing this.

Thanks again for all the help.

My 1999 V70 has slightly discolored, brownish, clear fluid in the reservoir, but the owner's manual calls for ATF. The stuff in the reservoir is definitely not ATF. I'm not sure what to use to top up the reservoir because i don't want to mix fluids. The dealership parts department says that they always use ATF, but they have pentosin fluid they can sell me if i want that.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks,

Sonny

ATF or not ATF that is the question...

Followed tech link to: http://www.gunk.com/CAT_M2712SYN.asp
It clearly states "Do not mix with ATF" yet the owners manual says use ATF.
What the heck should one do????
I actually topped up my reservoir about 1/4" using Gunk which the bottle said suits GM, Ford and Chrysler before I ran across this thread and without actually checking to see what the manual said.
Volvo dealers don't even seem to know what to use. It has been running for about a week with no problems. Didn't actually check the color of the old liquid. Guess I will tonight and see what it now looks like....
Guess if I have to add again in the future the best bet is to use the Gunk to which tech has referred...
