Default Rear bumper removal - safe?

Hi guys, I'm installing a tow hitch to my S80 and I need to remove the rear bumper to cut a hole in and get it fitted more easily. The instructions that come with the hitch are pretty sketchy in details.

Is it safe to remove the bumper as far as the airbags are concerned? I'm guessing there must be some airbag sensors in there somewhere. Is it possible to temporarily disable them?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

what year? my 2000 looks like all one would need to do is make a few measurments and create a templet and use a saws- all with a fine blade, but anyway, first things first, what year?

Hi there, thanks for the reply

It's a 2005 model, I've just had another look through the instructions for the towbar and you seem to have to take off the bumper to insert some metal pieces with a nut in them through some holes too. I wonder if this is accessible without taking it off? I can't check at the moment as I've hurt my back

Here's a link to the instructions:

Page 7 has the bit with the nuts.

Cheers,
Mikey

those are pretty darn good instructions, if you are handy with a socket set and a few other hand tools you should have no problem, feel free to ask more questions on this matter if you get in a tight spot, best regards, beefheart

Hey Beefheart, many thanks for your help

I finally got it all fitted up today, took a lot longer than I thought but I guess that's what you get for DIY The only hard bit was actually getting the rear bumper removed, but only because I wasn't sure what I was doing! I was worried about there being airbag sensors in the bumper but either there wasn't one or it was disabled with the battery disconnected.

All in all though, I'm glad it's finished! Just the rivets to go back in the wheelarch now.

Thanks again for your help,
Michael
