Default reduced performance ???

we have recently received a message from our cars system displayed as "reduced performance". the car started surging and cutting out, when at an idle it would surge at idle speeds between 500 rpm's and 900 rpm's approximately. any ideas of what my potential problems could be? is this something i can repair or will i need to have a mechanic with proper siagnostic equipment check it out? thanks for any help. i have a 2000 volvo s80 with 73k on it, sofar it has been flawless!!!

I would try cleaning the throttle body first.

If no better then the throttle body is bad.

Then try calling the dealer then you will fall into the Throttle body issue that is going on and might get it replaced for free.

well, i tried your suggestion. removed the tb and it was surprisingly clean! it had a small amount of black residue in it! i went ahead and cleaned it with a carb cleaner, put it all back together, and it ran fine for a little while. it posted the "reduced performance" in my messages again. allthough this time it didnt run nearly as rough, even at idle it had a small surge but not as bad as the first time. i turned the car off, let it set for a few, started it back up and the messages were gone, the idle was smooth??? this is a problem that came up all at once! i may have to take it to a dealer! is this a part / problem that is under recall? my car has 73000 aproximate miles on it, i do not have any type of extended warranty plan. if it is not covered under a recall notice i will probably be taking it to a independent that specializes in volvo repairs! we havent been very impressed with the service dept in our area. they seem more commited to taking your money than anything!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would take it to the dealer and ask about the throttle body lawsuit/recall and see what they say.
