are repairs really costly even if you do the work yourself
Hi I really like volvos and I am looking into buying a1999 s80 107k miles for $2000. I was told it needs new front window regulators, a paint job and the radio doesnt work. I am sure it needs more that I will find out when I go to check it out in person, but here are a few concerns I have: VOLVO'S ARE EXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN. my reall question is I am good with my 1995 camry and have done a lot of work on it and still have more to go, can I bring the cost of repairs down drastically if I do them myself or is this thing still going to cost an arm and a leg to keep up.
my second qusetion is are there any specific things I should look for when checking out this car in person ?
all help and info is greatly appreciated

The 99 was the worse year for the S80.
Check FCPgroton.com for parts to compare prices for the car.
Check everything over good.

Check the flame trap (PVC) for oil leaks (a PITA to fix). If it's a turbo, check the turbo oil return line fittings for leaks (another PITA to fix). Things that frequently go bad on these cars: strut mounts, swaybar end links, suspension bushings, Electronic Throttle Module (there's an extended warranty [10 years or 200,000 miles] from Volvo onthis, so make sure you get it checked out by next year if you buy the car), the auto dimming rearview mirror, and the fuel door hinge. Make sure the mechanic hooks up the OBD to get codes and check those out too. Make sure the timing belt has been changed (supposed to have been done at 105,000 miles).
id do timing belt sooner than 105.. id inspect belt and all tensioner bearings and everything. and these arent camry parts your buying here. they are considerably more expensive than your camry. yes, by doing the work yourself you will save a ton of money, but dont expect to have camry like costs on your volvo. or easy access to parts immediately.
