Default S80 Emmissions Service Message

1 day before taking my 2001 S80 in for it's 60K check (actual miles 65K), I got an "Emmission System Service Required" error & "Check Engine". The dealer ran Diags and said results were "internal failure of the variable valve timing unit". Recommendation was to replace CVVT unit and solenoid, obviously estimated at over $1000. Is this typical for that many miles? and Any other options/things to check before I drop the money? Thanks.

Doubt it's a misfire. Misfire codes are usually VERY specific with these newer cars.

To the original poster: Usually just replacing the solenoid (with gasket of course) will fix the problem. I would start there, and if the problem persist then replace the CVVT unit.

Also make sure the timing belt didn't jump a tooth.
