strut adjustment

okay so i dont know if this is a problem or what i was taking a look under the hood and my driver side strut adjustment nut is at the top of the threads and passenger side is like an inch below where the threads start and obviously they are different but im wondering if i should make them the same or what and to what specs. i would much appreciate some feedback.

RE: strut adjustment

if i am understanding this correctly you should definitely tighten that nut,

it should be obvious, is the nut holding anything down or not ?

RE: strut adjustment

OEMs are not ajustable. The nuts should be tight, there are2 eachone with 4 "tabs" under the big washer and one one top.

RE: strut adjustment

Are you talking about the big center nut or the smaller 13mm ones?

Ok here is the pics you e-mailed me.
By looking at them the drivers side is normal. The passenger side has the washer it is upside down and it also looks like the cross looking nut might be missing. But hard to tell the top nut would have to be removed and then you would have to see from there.

RE: strut adjustment

how would i remove the nut with just a wrench or do i need another tool and is it ok to remove it?

tech 12-31-2008 02:58 PM

RE: strut adjustment

Im not 100 percent if it is ok to remove the car should hold the spring compressed. You can remove the nut some with a wrench or socket and see if it comes loose. Take it loose some so you can lift up the washer and see if the cross nut is under there.

If not you will need a cross nut. But I will bet it is missing.

RE: strut adjustment

and if it is where can i get that whole cross nut and washer thing for a decent price?

tech 12-31-2008 03:16 PM

RE: strut adjustment

All you will need is a nut you will not need a washer you will flip over the washer that is there.

You might have to buy it from the dealer the link below doesnt list it. You could always call them and see if they can get it.

try your local industrial fastener place, i work at one and we get guys coming in all the time looking for OEM automotive / truck nuts and bolts

they are just that - OEM, so what we give them is similar but not the same ... does the same job though,,,

ask for a nylon insert locking nut, grade 8 or 9 preferably - its standard if not get a regular grade 8 nut and a lock washer, or a bonded washer- take one of yours off and show it to them so they can match the threads
