timing belt

hello,

I have a 99 S80 with 112k miles and I know that the timeing belt replacement with the tensioners is past due. If the timing belt breaks on the highway on high speed does it cause more damage to the engine if it breaks at low speed. Also my Volvo dealership keeps telling me that there is no way that the timing belt can be inspected because it is inside the engine and that they would have to take the entire engine out to inspect it.

Doesn't really matter what speed you are doing, when it goes there will be significant damage. I lost a T/belt whilst the engine was idling. It needed two pistons and all new valves. Fortunately, it was a work vehicle so cost me nothing.

There is no need to remove the engine to inspect or replace the belt but the dealer was probably trying to tell you that there is a lot of parts to remove to inspect it. A visual inspection would not tell much any way.

I was told 100000 miles, $200 for parts and 1 hr labour direct from Volvo. The S80 has an interference engine and it will cause engine damage if the belt jumps or breaks.
