RE: Valve noise?
Some have hydrolic lifters and some have solid lifters.
Once you take the black top cover off look and see if you have 4 Torxes screws around each cylinder. They screw into the Cam Cover.
If you have the screws then they are solid lifters.
If not hydrolic lifters.
Solid lifters will cost about $1000.00 to get adjusted.(maybe a little less but takes about 5 to 6 hours to adjust.

RE: Valve noise?
I went and test drove both a brand new 06 s60 and a 07 s80 3.2. The sounds your hearing are probably what I was wondering myself on my 02 s80 t6, nonetheless my engine sounds identical to a brand new volvo engine. So I would guess hydraulic lifters, also the Variable Valve Timing is going to be noiser. Just my thoughts...

RE: Valve noise?
Aftering reading more post, I think there are mention about oil O rings set replacement.Well, when I do my tune up, I'll look to see if it's manual lifter or not. If hydrolic then O-rings set. If manual, then valve adjustment is needed.
With that said, my car only has 45K mile, not only that, I noticed this loud engine noise a long time ago. Oh, we'll see. I'll report back.
