Default Popcorn noises 2018 v90CC t6

Getting this pop pop pop noise when passing or merging with traffic. From traffic light to traffic lights i don’t hear the noise. Originally i thought a BMW was passing me . Could this be the supercharger rattling? We are at 98k miles and I’ve read about them going around this milage. Maybe the fuel injectors? Can a bad supercharger throw these evap codes as well? Po442 and Po4fo.

Doubt you have a problem with the supercharger. If this was faulty, you wouldn't experience a surge in power when the gas pedal is depressed. Also, a faulty supercharger typically emits a loud whining or grinding noise. IMO, the most likely causes may be a bad spark plug and/or coil. While you are hunting around the engine, I'd also check for a leaking or cracked hose or loose pipe going to the supercharger and turbocharger. Age and high heat are not kind to rubber hoses, and Volvos have a lot of these in their engine bay. The sputtering performance could adversely, over time, impact the performance of the catalytic converter, so you should definitively look to address this issue. BTW, Volvo recommends changing the spark plugs around every 60K miles or 6 years. Regarding the coil packs, I don't think there's a recommendation from Volvo on when to replace, but these typically may need replacement when nearing 100K miles +/-, but can also last far longer. Life may depend on one's driving habits. The high boost from the supercharger and turbocharger add to the stress on the spark plugs and coils.

Regarding the codes you mentioned, they are likely due to a leak in the EVAP system and have nothing to do with the supercharger. This could be something as simple as the gas port not properly sealing after the last gas fill up. Suggest resetting your codes, then opening and closing the gas door, driving the car a little, then check for codes again. If the codes persist, I'd go to a local garage and ask them to run an EVAP smoke test to see if any hose leaks can be found.

PS: I own a factory ordered 2020 V90 Inscription T6, which has the same engine set up. Over the years, I've tried to stay informed about things that might go wrong, with the intent to perform preventative maintenance when possible to mitigate more costly repairs.
