Default will not shift into park

A few months ago I bought my son a 1997 Volvo S90, has been pretty much trouble free. He called me today and said that it will not shift into Park, tried shifting it through rev to low, but still no go. Any suggestions.
Thanks, Gary G.

Hard to say best thing is to remove the cover and look under it.

So there's nothing electric, good, I'll climb under it later today. First I'll disconnect the shifter fron the trans. and see if it'll shift into park that way, if not I guess the pan will have to come off. Hoping it's just a clip, or something else simple got disconnected from the park paw.......

Did anything fall into the shifter area like a coin?

more likely in the shifter mechanism in the car. Could be as simple as a broken shift **** not depressing the release rod to allow the shifter into park.

I found tooth picks loaded in the shift mech. when my dads 960 would not shift anymore.
Look in the easy spots first before going for the hard ones.

It was in the shifter, there's a "cam" type detent that rotates and pulls a cable that prevents you from removing the key when in gear, and locks the shifter in park when the car is turned off. Part of it was broken and it would fall over and block the shifter detent and the shifter would not go into Park. The easiest thing to do was to remove it, I ended up cutting it out with a hacksaw blade, cheapest & easiest fix, good for a 1997.......
