Machine gun noise from Volvo V40
From my Son-in-Law. When he turns the key to start the car there is a sound like a machine gun going off. It seems to be coming from behind the battery on the right hand side of the bonnet. This car has been stood for 12 months. Battery seems to be charged. Lights etc. work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. He has been out of work for over twelve months and may have to travel out of the area to get a job,

That noise is the starter solenoid chattering. The cause is almost certainly that the battery is insufficiently charged after sitting for 12 months. Do this:
1. If the battery is not sealed, inspect the battery elecotrolyte level in each cell (six cells total). The battery plates should be covered. If electrolyte is low, top off with DISTILLED water.
2. Check battery negative ground connection to frame for corrosion. Not a bad idea to remove bolt at ground connection, clean up and reinstall.
3. Charge battery.
4. If problem persists, remove the battery and take to an auto parts store (or whatever in the UK). They will test the battery for you. You may need to buy a new battery.
5. If the battery is not the problem, you may need to replace the starter, though I would first clean up the 12V connection to the starter. Before working on the starter, disconnect the battery.
