Just joined the forum so apologise if there was a similar thread previously...
I would like to upgrade the stereo and speakers in my V40 but heard that it's not a straight forward job...
Any advice?

Assuming your 2004 V40 is a "gen 1" with the rectangular double DIN radio, its not hard. You can swap in other OEM Volvo radios or after market single or double DINs. The Gen 2s (2004.5 and beyond) with the custom radio embedded in the dash is the one that is difficult.

If you go with double-din, you may need to shave the plastic guide down otherwise it won't fit. A single din is easy but you will want to buy a pocket to fill the remaining opening.



Here is some info that I put together back when I had my 2002 S40:

For those who want to up grade the head unit without hacking the wires. The Metra 70-9221 (for the 1999 and up S80 harness) fits the late 2001 - 2004 S40/V40 harness.

I finially took the chance and bought the harness adapter for the S80 and tried it on my S40. It fits mechanically and electrically without any modification. My guess is that this will fit any of the S/V40s with the HU-xxx series stereo.

BTY, Metra 40-VL10 for the antenna.
