Default V40 Warm start problem

Hello everyone

My trusty 2004 v40 1.9DS now has 172,000 on the clock and has only just started to give me starting problems. The car takes 2 or 3 turn overs in the morning before it starts and it helps to press the accelertor a little, I don't think it is Glow plugs because there is no smoke at all. What is even more confusing is that the car is very difficult to start when warm, if I pull off the motorway and pop into the services when I get back in I have to turn and turn and turn the engine until it eventually stumbles into starting but there is no smoke at all.

any help would be much appreciated as my wife is refusing to drive it until I get this problem sorted. I have listed the issue on other forums but the warm start issue seems to throw people, I suspected it might be the high pressure fuel pump but the car doesnt lack any power and drives perfectly once started. As an aside is this a Renault engine, it is a 2004 model (ex police car)

cheers

John
